TXWES falls short of miraculous upset in OT, SAC Quarterfinals

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - Texas Wesleyan Men's Soccer (4-15) laid the whole season on the line Friday night at Mid-America Christian (15-2-1). After losing to the Evangels 3-0 just a week ago, TXWES got two goals on the No. 2 seed in the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament and took the Evangels to overtime in a 3-2 defeat.

Texas Wesleyan scored first in the 24th minute. Julius Williams received a pass from Carlos Mendez and stuck the ball in the back of the net. The goal set the Rams up for success - in TXWES' last eight games, the Rams were 7-0-1 when scoring first.

After MACU scored two, the Rams struck back with an Eddy Rodriguez goal in the 53rd minute - his first of the season. Lee Benting provided the assist. The goal came less than two minutes after the Evangels took their first lead of the game.

The Evangels got the game-winner in the 102nd minute, just eight minutes away from the rare penalty shootout. It was the first time MACU Men's Soccer had ever hosted a SAC Tournament game, despite winning the tournament last season as the No. 5 seed.

MACU sprayed 34 shots in the game, only getting 13 of them on target. Goalkeeper Bastian Blumenberg nabbed 10 saves.

A season full of injuries to key players like Matheus Macedo, Alfredo Rodriguez and Claudio Barraza, the Rams battled through the rigorous conference slate and made dents in a number of opponents, most notably Southwestern Christian, who lost in a penalty shootout with Wayland Baptist in their quarterfinal match, Friday. TXWES can re-group behind what is shaping up to be an outstanding senior class that includes Williams, Blumenerg, Macedo, Alfredo Rodriguez, Eddy Rodriguez, Benting, Hector Wong, Juan Rey and Alberto Lopez.

Three of the four SAC Quarterfinal matches were decided in overtime and all four were decided by just one goal. Even No. 1 John Brown nearly blew a two-goal lead against No. 8 SAGU in a 3-2 victory.
