SAN ANTONIO, TX - After a slow start, Texas Wesleyan Women's Basketball (8-2) gave another quality effort on the road against an opponent from outside the NAIA, nearing beating the University of Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners, 80-78 in an exhibition Friday night before the team's holiday break began.
After 25 first-half points, the Lady Rams scored 53 in the second half, including 28 in the third quarter. With a smaller-than-usual rotation of seven,
Alexus Brigham and
Makayla Coy each scored 14 points and five rebounds off the bench to help a balanced group of starters (
Destiney Winkfield: 15 points, six assists;
Nicole Gleason: 14 points, four three-pointers and
Evie Whorley: 12 points, six rebounds.
TXWES couldn't overcome Adryana Quezada's 32 points and 12 rebounds on 15-of-21 shooting. The score was tied five times with nine lead changes. The Lady Rams forced 21 turnovers while only coughing it up eight times, with a 24-10 edge in points off turnovers as a result.
it was the fifth and final exhibition of the season for Texas Wesleyan. The Rams are plenty prepared for Sooner Athletic Conference competition that resumes against Oklahoma Panhandle State on January 2 at the Sid Richardson Center. TXWESÂ is already off to a 2-0 start in the SAC, while OPSU lost its first two games against conference competition.
