CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - Texas Wesleyan Women's Basketball (5-1) got another test outside of the NAIA when the Lady Rams took on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (5-3) of the Southland Conference, a NCAA DI program. TXWES fell 90-52 to the Islanders.
Texas Wesleyan went toe-to-toe with the Islanders early, holding a 14-12 advantage with 2:59 to play in the first quarter. The Lady Rams were out-scored 28-5 the rest of the second half, but came out of the locker room re-focused and outscored Corpus to start the third quarter 8-5. The deficit, ultimately was just too much to overcome. It was TXWES' fourth game against a DI or DII program so far in 2019-2020 and have one more exhibition road trip to San Antonio to take on UTSAÂ December 20 before Sooner Athletic Conference play ramps back up in January.Â
Nicole Gleason led the Rams in scoring with 11 points including a couple of threes.
Destiney Winkfield had four of the team's nine assists and
Chrystal Ngawuchu snarled six rebounds to go along with her six points.
Jordan Brightwell, Winkfield and
Evie Whorley also put in six points.
A usually stout Texas Wesleyan bench couldn't match the depth of the Islanders as Corpus Christi won the bench battle 46-17. Despite the final score, the game was tied 10 times and the lead changed hands in four instances throughout the 40 minutes.
TXWES' seven-game road trip continues in Florida when the Lady Rams travel to the Sunshine State to face Florida Memorial on Tuesday December 17 in Miami Gardens and Johnson & Wales University the following day.
