FORT WORTH - Four players scored in double figures and Texas Wesleyan Men's Basketball (13-16, 8-13 SAC) kept the turnovers down (10) but No. 9 Wayland Baptist (23-7, 18-3 SAC) continued their dominance of the Sooner Athletic Conference this season with an 81-73 edging of the Rams Thursday night at the Sid Richardson Center.
The heartbreak season continued for Texas Wesleyan, which has been without the team's top two scorers since
Juwan Jones suffered an injury against Bacone on January 26. In that time, the Rams are 3-5 - losing those five games by an average of just six points. In total, the last nine Ram losses have all come by single digits. All those close losses have culminated in a record that won't be enough to qualify for the conference tournament this season.
Peyton Sallee continued his impressive end-of-season run with 17 points, hitting 5-of-9 threes with six rebounds and three steals.
Rob Thomas grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to go along with 15 points and three steals as well.
Joe Cook-Green's aggressiveness paid off all night, turning into 14 points, five assists and four boards.
Sam Lorenzen had six of the team's 16 assists and scored 13 points.
Dare Brazeal turned in a near double-double: eight points and seven rebounds. The six assists for Lorenzen was a season-high.
Texas Wesleyan took much greater advantage of Pioneer turnovers, scoring 17 points off of 15 turnovers and allowing just one bucket on the other end by Wayland's offense. The Rams hit 12 threes - the sixth time in the last seven games the squad has hit at least 10 treys.
Thomas hit a shot from deep with 8:31 to play, putting TXWES up 64-53. After that, the Pioneers went on a 28-9 run to close out the game, taking their first lead down the stretch with 1:31 remaining. Wayland Baptist converted all their free throws to points (11-for-11), 10 of which came in the second half, nine from Josh Throns, who improved on his 88 percent clip from the line on the season.
Despite starting in a 10-0 hole, Texas Wesleyan quickly responded - scoring nine of the next 18 points in the game to get their feet under them, then went on a 12-0 run to take its first lead - 21-19 with 8:43 to go in the first half.
WHAT'S NEXT
It will be a special Senior Day for this group, who will all be celebrating terrific moments as Rams, even if the 2018-2019 run suffered through a ton of injuries and unfortunate circumstances. Routine starters
Rob Thomas and
Dare Brazeal along with
Sam Smith,
Eric Johnson and
Andre Edwards Jr. will be honored. Tipoff is at 4 p.m. against Oklahoma Panhandle State, whose postseason aspirations can still be dashed by the Rams. The Aggies are one game ahead of Southwestern Christian for the eighth and final spot in the SAC Tournament bracket.
