Baseball sweeps Dallas Christian to stay unbeaten at Sycamore

FORT WORTH - Texas Wesleyan Baseball (14-3) continued their stellar non-conference play - including a 13-0 record at Sycamore Park - with a two-game series sweep over Dallas Christian Saturday after Friday's game was canceled in Dallas due to weather. The Rams won the first game, 3-2, with three-up, three-down in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings and took Game 2, 5-0, with only two hits given up by Cameron Vige, who stretched his time on the mound the full seven frames.

GAME 1
After Houston Glad got the start and pitched two innings striking out two, Jesse Ramirez came in and wowed the crowd once more this season, improving his record to 4-0. Ramirez - who still has a 0.45 ERA through eight games and 15 innings pitched struck out six, including the last two batters in the top of the seventh - looking and swinging. Outside of a single in the third, Ramirez gave up absolutely nothing.

The Rams pulled ahead in the bottom of the third. Brooks Wallace led the inning off with a single Sheadion Jamanika was walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch, leaving Michael Davila to single in the sweet spot and drive in both runners. Coupled with a Joseph Barfield score on a passed ball in the bottom of the second and that was enough for the Rams to pull ahead and keep the lead.

Wallace was 2-for-2 at the plate, getting walked once, and led the way for the Rams offense that produced seven hits. Craig Mattes turned in a double in the bottom of the 4th and also reached on a fielding error in the second which started the chain of events that led to Barfield's eventual score.

GAME 2
Vige was impressive, there's no other way to say it. Vige struck out 11 batters, the most strikeouts for a Ram pitcher this season, matching only one other performance from the 2018 season - Corley Huffstickler's 11 against, coincidentally, Dallas Christian on March 24, 2018, nearly 11 months to the day.

Vige struck out his first two batters then got two in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. The defense behind him committed zero errors and the Rams topped Dallas Christian for the 22nd time in 26 meetings.

The Rams offense used a four-run explosion in the fifth to pull away thanks to a bunch of non-explosive walks on an extremely blustery day at the ballpark. The bases were loaded on walks alone before a wild pitch brought Joseph Barfield in to score again. Jamanika's single couple with the only error of the game - in Dallas' Christian's left field - helped Brooks Wallace and Brayden Bahnsen score. Davila doubled on the next at-bat, bringing in Jamanika.

ON PACE TO SHATTER RECORD
The Texas Wesleyan pitching staff of 2013 struck out 421 batters during a 42-18 season. With 148 Ks so far this season, the Rams are averaging 8.7 Ks each game. With 36 games left in the regular season, there's 313 more strikeouts to come at this pace. The Rams lead the nation in strikeouts after Saturday's 19 total.

WHAT'S NEXT
Texas Wesleyan will travel to stomping grounds of old, when they face Arlington Baptist Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Grand Prairie at the Air Hogs Ballpark where the Rams previously played home games. It's the first of two meetings this season with another one-gamer on the schedule March 19.
