Rams Romp, Streak to 10

FORT WORTH, Texas – The Texas Wesleyan baseball team improved to 10-0 after a 10-5, 7-inning marathon win over Bethany College (2-5) at Sycamore Park on a rainy Saturday.

Originally scheduled for a double header, the two teams were limited to just one game due to weather.

The TXWES offense gave starter Max Martinez a four-run cushion early in the four-hour contest, starting with a Houston Glad RBI double the zoomed over the left fielder's head. The Swedes could not stay out of trouble, walking home two more before an error capped the second inning.

Bethany proved resilient, striking for two in the fourth. Branden Peters laced a single through the left side with the bases loaded for the first score. A wild pitch resulted in the second run.

The Swedes made it a one-run 4-3 ball game in the sixth on a Lyric Walker RBI single into shallow left. Bethany loaded the bases with one away later in the inning, poised to do more than just tie the game.

Jeddidiah Fagg and the Rams had different ideas. Tyler Horchem crushed a ball that looked like a two-run double down the left field line, but Fagg made a beautiful diving stop behind third. He popped up and beat the runner to the third base bag and fired over to Glad at first for the inning-ending double play.

The offensive attack blew the game wide open in a six-run sixth. Michael Davila singled home a run to start the rally, before David Pewenofkit, coming off the bench to pinch hit, delivered a two-run line drive into left-center. Joseph Barfield added another on a liner into shallow center. Brooks Wallace and Glad each worked RBI walks to cap the drive.

The Swedes came back with two in the seventh, but it was not enough to stop the white-hot Rams from earning its tenth consecutive win.

Glad was 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI, while Braden Bahnson went 3 for 5 in the win. Barfield was 2 for 4 and drove in one. Davila and Pewenofkit each had a hit and two RBI in the effort.

The team ends its home stand undefeated and will travel to Shreveport to play in the LSU – Shreveport invitational, starting on Friday, February 15. Opponents and times to be determined.
