FORT WORTH - Texas Wesleyan Baseball (18-3, 2-0 SAC) continued their impressive run into Sooner Athletic Conference play Friday with two victories against Central Christian (1-11, 0-2 SAC), 15-2 in Game 1 and 11-3 in Game 2.
The afternoon - full of exciting storylines, plays and stretches of dominance - helped the Rams improve to 15-0 at Sycamore Park this season and to 7-0 against the Tigers all-time.
THE THROW
In the top of the 6th inning, Central Christian was enjoying their most success of the day, bringing in three runs on two hits after TXWES pitcher
Cameron Vige dominated the first five innings. It was shortstop
Alan Campero who stopped the fun for the Tigers. A diving play just past second base, Campero snagged the ball in stop-drop-and-roll fashion and from his backside, flung a throw perfectly to first baseman
Sheadion Jamanika for the out to close out the sixth.
It was the only inning of Game 2 CCC managed to score in and Campero's play at shortstop was the difference in the game. The Tigers committed five errors in the game, three of which were shortstop attempted throws to first base. Campero was 2-of-4 in Game 2 earning RBI singles in both the fifth and sixth frame. Campero also gained a RBI on a triple down the left-field line in the fifth inning of Game 1, part of an eight-run fifth that blew the scoring open.
THE HOMERS
There was plenty of magic in that Game 1 fifth inning. The highlight was
Caden Williams who blasted a home run over the left-field fence to cap a 3-for-3, 2 RBI performance. Williams became the sixth different Ram to hit a home run through the first 21 games of the season. One more ball would be lost behind the wall, Friday.
Enter
David Pewenofkit. After 'Pee Wee', as his teammates refer to him, connected on his only opportunity at the plate in Game 1 - which he turned into a double to right-center to bring in three runners (part of that magical fifth inning) - the 6'0", 245-pound pinch-hitter launched a rocket into right field in the first inning of Game 2, helping bring home Williams. It was Pewenofkit's second home run of the season and the eighth home run for the Rams.
THE LOCKDOWN MOUND
No relievers needed on this day.
Houston Glad got the start for Game 1 and went the full seven innings, striking out 10 batters allowing just three hits and two walks to improve to 3-1 in 2019.
Cameron Vige - fresh off an 11-strikeout, 2-hit, shutout performance against Dallas Christian - put away nine batters allowing just four hits and two walks, moving his record to 4-1. Vige struck out the first five batters he faced.Â
Vige now has the most strikeouts on the team (40), which is good enough for second in the nation, not factoring in other top pitchers who may have played Friday (leaderboards update the day following games).
In both games, neither pitcher allowed a hit in the first two innings allowing the offense to take command of the game. On the flip-side, three different times Tiger pitchers loaded the bases with no outs, leaving Cental Christian's defense in impossible situations. The Rams' offense drew 13 total walks, including four to
Jeddediah Fagg, who has been walked at least once in four straight games and has either been walked or hit by a pitch on 27 of his 54 appearances at the plate.
NOT JUST SINGLES
Eight of the Rams' 23 hits in two wins went for doubles, triples or homers. In Game 2,
Michael Davila bounced back from a 0-for-3 performance in the leadoff position to hit 2-for-4 with a critical double in the sixth inning to help counter-balance Central Christian's three runs from the top of the frame. The Rams scored four runs in the sixth. Texas Wesleyan entered the game ninth in the NAIA in doubles with 37.
After outscoring the Tigers 3-0 in the fourth inning of Game 2, the Rams now have outscored their opponents in every inning over the course of the season and in total are outscoring opponents 155-97.
WHAT'S NEXT
Texas Wesleyan will face the Tigers in Game 3 of the three-game series tomorrow for a nine-inning bout starting at noon. Audio broadcast and live stats will be available at ramsports.net/live.
