FORT WORTH, Texas – The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (3-15, 0-4 SAC) dropped a double header to Oklahoma Panhandle State University (12-6, 3-3 SAC) at Sycamore Park on Friday. The Aggies grabbed 5-3 and 11-3 wins over the Lady Rams.
The Lady Rams knocked in the first run of the day in the third inning when
Taylor Sutton scalded the ball into deep right center for a RBI double.
The Aggies came right back in the fourth to produce a pair of runs on four hits. Kayli Grove drove in the tying run before Brittany Thomas followed that up with a well-placed shot through the left side with a runner on third.
Bailey Terry lifted the Lady Rams to a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning.
Makenna Aycock raced out a slap single to first to lead-off the inning and made her way to second on a steal. Terry launched a moon shot to left field that powered its way over the fence against prevailing 15-20 mph winds.
Panhandle State tied the game in the next half inning Jewell Lee knocked on a two-out single. The Aggies added two more after a TXWES error led to a 2-run double by Brittany Thomas to secure a 5-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Lady Rams could not make up any ground, dropping game one, 5-3. Terry went 1 for 2 with a pair of RBI. Sutton was 1 for 2 with one RBI.
Makenna Aycock (1-7) suffered the loss despite six strikeouts.
In game two, the Aggies used the momentum from game one to take a 2-run lead in the top of the first. A part of a three hit inning, Thomas snuck a worm burner straight through the middle into center field to score two runs on the play.
Texas Wesleyan bounced back to tie the game in the bottom of the opening stanza, after OPSU loaded the bases full of Lady Rams. A passed ball allowed the first run to score before a
Kaitlyn Johnson RBI groundout tied the game at two apiece.
Panhandle State plated a pair in the third on a double from Kayli Grove and a single by Haley Neal. The Aggies added an insurance run in the top of the fourth on a Jena Konieczka line drive to shallow center, just out of reach of the speedy
Jenna Rhoades.
The Lady Rams chipped into the lead in the bottom half of the inning.
Hailey Hollingsworth belted a double down the left field line before
Lacy Mann drove her home on a two-out bloop single into shallow left field.
The Aggies added two more scores in the sixth extending the lead to 7-3 after back-to-back extra base hits to get the inning started, including a RBI triple to deep right by Karah Ortiz. A sacrifice fly capped the scoring drive.
OPSU would go on to score four more in the seventh, as the Lady Rams fell 11-3 in game two.
Lacy Man (1-7) recorded the loss, but went 1 for 2 with a run batted in at the plate. Rhoades was 1 for 2 with two walks and a run scored.
The Rams and Aggies will complete the four-game series with a double header at Sycamore Park tomorrow starting at 1:00 p.m.
