Softball splits first two with SAGU

WAXAHACHIE, TX - Texas Wesleyan Softball (6-16, 3-5 SAC) earned a 5-0 victory over previously-unbeaten-in-conference Southwestern Assemblies of God (14-10, 9-1 SAC) 5-0 in the second game of Tuesday afternoon's doubleheader. The Lady Rams dropped the first meeting, 4-2.

Lacy Mann pitched some of her best stuff of the season in a full seven innings of work in Game 2, allowing no runs on six hits with three strikeouts. She walked just three without hitting a batter. Mann also delivered a SAC fly in the fifth allowing Bailey Terry to score for the fourth run.

Contributions from a couple of players relatively new to the lineup helped the Lady Rams pull ahead. In the top of the third, Emilia Egel, singled to right field to bring home Taylor Sutton, the first points of the deuce and Egel's first RBI as a Lady Ram. Egel had seen just one other plate appearance in 2019, against Bethel College (hit by pitch). Next up - Saeya Esparza. With nine starts under her belt, Esparza singled to right field to bring home Mann and Terry. It was Esparza's second and third RBI of the season.

That cushion helped Mann at the plate. The Lady Rams defense turned a double play in the third and her defense helped her earn a quick appearance in the fourth - three up, three down. She struck out two looking in the fifth frame.

It wasn't Egel's first successful at-bat. She capitalized in the second inning on a single left of the pitcher to go 2-for-3 in the game. Esparza would deliver again in the fifth with another single - advancing to second on the throw allowing Hailey Hollingsworth to move into third. Another unearned run followed, as Ashton Davis reached on an error from the SAGU shortstop, bringing in Hollingsworth.

SAGU errors accounted for a total of four unearned runs in the seven-inning stretch, which toppled the Lions in their quest to keep pace with the only other unbeaten team in the conference - University of Science and Arts - who is still unbeaten overall.

TXWES didn't commit any errors Tuesday, but mistake-free softball couldn't off-set SAGU's consistency in Game 1. Pitcher Casey Waterman did not walk any of the 27 batters she faced as the Lions defense stranded four Lady Rams in a tight ballgame. Down 4-0, Terry homered giving Texas Wesleyan new life and bringing Sutton home with her. Terry had her best stretch of the season - 4-for-7 with 2 RBI in the two games.

Mann connected on 2-of-3 attempts in Game 1 while Hollingsworth had a 2-for-4 showing in the Game 2 triumph. In the last 10 games in Waxahachie, the Lady Rams have only allowed 10 runs to the Lions. This was the fifth time TXWES has shutout SAGU in their neck of the woods during that stretch.

WHAT'S NEXT
After getting a pair of wins at home last Saturday against Oklahoma Panhandle State, softball hopes home cookin' stays fresh against those unbeaten Drovers Friday before Mid-America Christian comes to town Saturday. Both doubleheaders will start at 2 p.m. The Lady Rams will finish off their series with SAGU at home on Saturday April 27 to celebrate Senior Day.
