FORT WORTH - In the Lady Rams' final tune-up for Sooner Athletic Conference play, Texas Wesleyan Softball (3-11) once again had to endure dreary conditions through a weekend tournament of wind, cold and spitting rain - this time in Grand Prairie after dropping the Friends University hosted tournament in Kansas due to weather. Many Kansas teams came with TXWES and the results included a Lady Rams win over York 9-4 and losses to Ottawa (Kan.), McPherson, Bethel and Tabor.
The victory over York (0-8) included a thrilling five-run seventh inning to pull away. Up 4-3,
Hailey Hollingsworth homered to left field, the second Lady Ram home run of the young season (the first came in the same game). After a walk and a wild pitch,
Kimani Ferguson popped out of the dugout and hit a single to right field to score
Makenna Aycock. Ferguson then stole second and two batters later
Bailey Terry brought her home with a single to left field.
With a costly error with two outs in York's outfield, the Lady Rams scored two unearned runs to cap a three-hit, game-changing frame. Terry and Johnson were each 2-for-4 with a RBI. Johnson hit that first home run to center field in the fifth inning.
The big bats kept swinging throughout the weekend. Against Ottawa (7-5), Terry earned her first home run of 2019 and Johnson got her second against McPherson (5-6) in the fourth frame - this time into right field. It's the second time in less than a year Texas Wesleyan has had three consecutive games with deep shots that dropped over the fence.
In total, Johnson went 5-for-14 with 3 RBI in four appearances.
A WILD 10THÂ WITH OTTAWA
Texas Wesleyan played a crazy extra session with Ottawa (Kan.) in the second game of Friday's slate. Ottawa, the designated visitor, scored four runs in the top of the 10th, only to nearly see their lead completely vanish.Â
With Terry starting the bottom of the 10th at second base, Johnson continued her impressive day with a single.
Hailey Hollingsworth then singled to left and Terry scored. Ferguson reached on a second-baseman bobble, which scored Johnson. Aycock singled to center and just like that - it was a one-run game. The tying run was thrown out trying to keep the comeback alive.
OTHER NOTABLES
Lacy Mann, who doesn't always get appearances at the plate, went 2-for-2 against Tabor College, avoiding the 10 strikeouts thrown TXWES' way by the stout Tabor (3-5) pitching.
It was a bounce-back weekend for
Bailey Terry. The senior who led the team with a .429 batting average in 2018 season hadn't found many big swings before the weekend but connected on 5-of-17 plate appearances, including a double, triple and her homer in Grand Prairie.
PITCHING SUMMARY
Over the five games, Mann saw the most action, pitching 22 innings allowing 25 hits with 19 strikeouts. Aycock earned 9.2 innings giving up 12 hits with six Ks.
Hailey Hollingsworth and
Kaitlyn Johnson saw some action in relief, combining for 3.1 innings on the mound with three strikeouts.
WHAT'S NEXT
Conference play couldn't start much tougher, with No. 1 Oklahoma City (12-1) coming into town Tuesday to start a four-game series with the Lady Rams - a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. The other two games against the Stars will be in OKC later in the season on Tuesday April 9.
