FORT WORTH, Texas – The 17th ranked Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (29-6, 10-3 SAC) used a 5-run fourth inning to hold off No. 5 Oklahoma City University (29-5, 10-3 SAC) 6-4 at Sycamore Park on Friday.
The Rams offense produced 14 hits and displayed some impressive power, but it was the pitching that held the Stars in check at the plate that proved to make the biggest impact.
The Reliever
Parker Robinson picked up his fifth save, throwing four strong innings. The reliever allowed just one run on three hits, while striking out a career-high seven batters. His 0.94 ERA ranks first among all NAIA pitchers.
The Starter
Josh Brown (4-1) limited the chances, allowing just five hits with no walks over five innings of work. The Ram defense was solid, not allowing the Stars to put up any crooked numbers.
The Stars stuck first in the top of the first, bagging a run after lead-off hitter Quin Walbergh drove a liner into deep right field before Bryson Lierle knocked in the run with a single through the left side.
Oklahoma City added another score in the third, but the Rams got one back on a one-two punch from
Jeddediah Fagg and
Sheadion Jamanika. Fagg smacked a base hit into shallow left field. On the first pitch of the next at bat, Jamanika smoked a liner down the left field line that found its way all the way in the corner for a RBI double to make it a 2-1 game after three innings of play.
The Big Inning
The Rams got to the nation's second ranked pitcher Bryce Milligan (0.84 ERA) in the fourth.
Brayden Bahnsen started a rally of five consecutive hits on the way to a four-run inning.
Caden Williams started the scoring on a RBI single that hit off the top of the left field wall.
Michael Davila followed with a beautiful opposite field double down the right field line to score another. Fagg sneaked another single to left for a score before Jamanika capped the scoring with a rocket back up the middle to give the Rams a 6-2 lead.
The Stars would get two back, but the Brown-Robinson duo and the Ram defense held off the fifth ranked team in the land.
Jamanika went 3 for 4 with two RBI. Williams, Davila and Fagg all had two hits and a RBI.
Tanner Amaral was 2 for 4 in the win.
These two teams will meet again at Sycamore Park tomorrow, March 30 in double header action starting at 1:00 p.m.
