No. 15 Rams split with Jarvis Christian

FORT WORTH - Texas Wesleyan University Baseball (31-8) started slow but finished with one of their most impressive comeback performances of the season against Jarvis Christian (25-13) Tuesday on a sunny day at Sycamore Park. The Rams dropped the first game 9-4 and won the second 7-5.

EVERYTHING GOOD STARTED WITH A BUNT
With two outs, nobody on and Texas Wesleyan down 5-0 in the bottom of the third, the offense needed a spark. This spark plan was simple enough: Alan Campero - get a bunt down and use your speed to get on base. The methodology worked. Campero's bunt was textbook down the left foul line and he beat out the throw to first to end a streak of 13 hitless batters that dated back to the fifth inning of Game 1.

When something works, try it again. Brayden Bahnsen stepped up to the plate and he too delivered a successful bunt and just like that the Rams had runners on first and second. Bahnsen stole second and advanced Campero to third before Caden Williams was walked - bases loaded. Michael Davila took a walk and TXWES was on the board. While the Bulldogs got out of the jam, the damage had already been done: the Rams believed at the plate again.

The fourth inning was all Texas Wesleyan's. Sheadion Jamanika started the inning off with a triple that clanged against the wall in center field, Tanner Amaral took a ball to the wrist and Joseph Barfield reached on a fielder's choice to bring home Jamanika. Brooks Wallace laid down a sacrifice bunt next for momentum to come full circle back to the top of the lineup. Campero's single scored a run and Bahnsen followed with a single of his own. Williams tied the game with his single.

Davila doubled to right center to give the Rams the lead. In all, TXWES scored six runs with 13 at-bats on seven hits. Four of those runs in the fourth came with two outs.

FRESHMAN WIN
Jarvis Christian never recovered from the Rams resurgence in confidence. On the mound, Texas Wesleyan pitched five scoreless innings after starting in a 5-0 hole. Freshman Jordan Granado got his first win of the season, pitching 2 1/3 innings, allowing two hits with a strikeout. Parker Robinson and Cameron Vige finished the bulldogs off combining to earn four strikeouts with just one hit surrendered.

TWO OUT CURSE
The Bulldogs weren't the only team that struggled to get off the field with two outs - that was the Rams' main issue in the Game 1 loss. Jarvis scored seven of their nine runs in Game 1, with Texas Wesleyan's pitching staff not able to get off the field - a combination of Ian Nash, Justin Ward, Steven Frederick and Max Martinez who struggled to figure out the Bulldogs' batters. The four did, however, combine to strikeout 10, four more strikeouts than in the Rams' Game 2 triumph.

In all, the two teams in two games combined to score 17 of their 25 runs with two outs on the board.

BATTING SUMMARY
Williams finished 4-of-6 with a RBI, Tuesday. Bahnsen also collected four hits on eight balls put in play. Davila drove in three runs on 2-of-5 at the plate. Reigning SAC Player of the Week Jamanika was 3-of-7. Campero (3-of-8) and Barfield (2-of-6) also moved runners home.

WHAT'S NEXT
The Rams will travel to Mid-America Christian for a three-game series in Oklahoma City Friday April 5 and Saturday April 6. Texas Wesleyan has won 13 of the 17 all-time meetings with the Evangels.
