Lady Rams split with SAGU for second time in 2019

FORT WORTH - For 13 of Friday's 14 innings, Texas Wesleyan Softball (22-26, 17-15 SAC) was held scoreless by the tough pitching from Southwestern Assemblies of God (24-24, 19-15 SAC) and an even tougher strike zone to pin down. But one inning stole the show - to the Lady Rams' advantage - that helped TXWES split the last two games in a four game series with the Lions.

SAGU took Game 1, 5-0, and Texas Wesleyan found their offense in a 5-2 win in Game 2 at Sycamore Park.

In the bottom of the fourth in Game 2, down 1-0, the Lady Rams found the magic at the plate. It started with a Lacy Mann walk and a Taylor Sutton double; then, a timely re-entry. Kaitlyn Johnson, who found herself out of the rotation with some adjustments to the defensive lineup in Game 1, singled to right-center to put the Lady Rams on the board, only the beginning for a team that has shown extreme confidence at the plate all season long with just an ounce of momentum.

Kimani Ferguson was the second Ram to take a walk in the dirt in the fourth and Ashton Davis' fourth ball brought in a run. Before the fourth in Game 2, SAGU had walked just one batter - the Davis walk cost the Lions the lead and the series. Two batters later, Kylie Summers singled to centerfield, pushing TXWES' advantage to 3-1. Summers was dynamite at the plate all day, getting five of the team's 12 hits - 5-for-7 with that RBI.

Next up, Savannah Brixey, drilling a dribbler up the middle. Katherine Knotts cost an out, but helped Davis score off the walk she took earlier.

The two teams split the season series 2-2 with one bizarre stat. The Lady Rams scored 12 runs in the series and got runs batted in from 9 different players: Emilia Egel, Saeya Esparza, Bailey Terry, Mann, Johnson, Davis, Summers, Brixey and Knotts.

Mann was steady on the mound. She pitched 13 of the 14 innings Friday, earning four strikeouts but used her defense to get 20 outs on grounders and 15 fly-outs.

Friday's first battle was the first win for SAGU at Sycamore since March 4, 2014. After the Lions program won just eight conference games between 2014-16, the Lions have been victorious in 43 conference games the last three years. The Lady Rams still dominate the rivalry series - 27-5. The Lions stay a game ahead of the Rams in the SAC Standings for the fight for fourth place. SAGU will play Southwestern Christian Sunday in its season finale.

WHAT'S NEXT
Senior Day is here, with Southwestern Christian coming into town for the final two games of their four-game series with TXWES, with first pitch Saturday at 12 p.m. The Lady Rams won both games in five innings the first go-around, and SWC has fallen to 7-23 in conference play.

Texas Wesleyan will be honoring a short but important listing of seniors that includes the program's single-season strikeout record-holder Makenna Aycock (broke this season), the program's all-time home run and RBI leader Bailey Terry and manager Shelby Spence.
