Rams split to start SAC Tournament

TXWES will play elimination game Monday, time TBD

OKLAHOMA CITY - Two days later, after the rain went away and the grounds dried up, No. 14 Texas Wesleyan Baseball (42-13) finally got to hit the field in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament. While the day didn't start the way the Rams hoped - taking a 6-4 loss to No. 6 Mid-America Christian, the squad rebounded, punishing Oklahoma Panhandle State 19-5 in a game that featured 31 total hits.

This came after Oklahoma Panhandle State gave a heroic effort against Oklahoma City - the tournament's No. 2 seed - falling 10-9 in a 24-hit, three hour marathon to start the day.

TXWES' victory over the Aggies featured eight runs in the third and home runs from Michael Davila (his second of the day) and Caden Williams. The 19 runs were the most of the season.

The third inning was a delight for Texas Wesleyan getting a little bit of everything: three singles (Joseph Barfield, Tanner Amaral and Josh Davis), two doubles (Jeddediah Fagg and Sheadion Jamanika), Williams' home run to right field on an 0-2 count, a wild pitch, two walks, a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error. The inning gave the Rams a 13-5 lead, cementing the third-straight game against the Aggies in the SAC Tournament the Rams have scored more than 10 runs.

In total, Williams and Davila combined for 9 RBI hitting 5-for-9 at the plate. The Rams went up and down the lineup six times. Alan Campero connected on 3-of-5 attempts, Fagg was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI on a pair of doubles, while Barfield, Davis and Brooks Wallace all had multiple-hit outings as well.

Houston Glad, Garrett Moltzan and Steven Frederick all pitched two innings - with Frederick being credited the win - while Justin Ward came in for one. Panhandle State threw five different pitchers.

The No. 7 Aggies were sent packing in the double elimination format as was the eighth-seeded Wayland Baptist Pioneers. The top two seeds won both their games Sunday, meaning the Rams will square off again with MACU Monday for the right to continue on, that is if the score from late Friday night holds.

In a game that didn't start until roughly 8:47 p.m., the Stars led the Evangels 8-2 but play was suspended in the seventh inning due to more rain. If the score holds, Oklahoma City will await the winner of TXWES and MACU, who will have to take out the Stars twice - once Monday afternoon and then again on Championship Tuesday at 10 a.m. (if necessary) for the right to advance to the title game Tuesday at 5 p.m. A revised time for Texas Wesleyan's elimination game Monday has not yet been determined. OCU and MACU will resume their game Monday at 11 a.m.

The first date with MACU was the first time the two had ever faced in the SAC Postseason. Texas Wesleyan held a 1-0 lead into the sixth when the Evangels caught fire scoring three in the sixth and three in the seventh. The Rams responded in the eighth. Davila stepped up and homered into left field to start things off right. Tanner Amaral doubled to left center and Sheadion Jamanika traded places with him to trim the deficit to four, 6-2. With two outs, Mark Schreiner came in to hit and singled to right field - 6-3. Fagg singled on an 0-2 count to bring in the fourth run but TXWES stalled out.

In the ninth, the Rams lined into a double play to seal the loss. Parker Robinson got the start and before the Evangels got the best of him in the sixth, Robinson struck out five and walked just one, with only three hits allowed. Out of the bullpen, freshman Jordan Granado struck out two of the four batters he faced, along with help from Jesse Ramirez and Josh Brown.
