HATTIESBURG, MS - Texas Wesleyan Men's Soccer (0-1) had a chance to work out some kinks Thursday night in a 7-1 loss to No. 3 William Carey.
In only the second meeting all-time between these two programs, the Crusaders showed why they were worthy of national recognition this off-season. Still, despite the goal difference, William Carey only was +11 in shot differential and had a hard time containing the Rams leading goal scorer from 2018 - senior
Claudio Barraza - who put the Rams on the board in the 90th minute, giving TXWES some positive feelings on the bus ride to Alabama.
Texas Wesleyan will face Mobile University - another athletics program that honors the Ram - Saturday. It was the fourth shot taken by Barraza - tied for most by any player on the pitch. The goal came off a penalty kick with just 35 seconds left in the match.
A pair of goals by William Carey's Tim Doherty in less than a minute (in the 21st and 22nd minutes) helped the Crusaders push a slim 1-0 margin into a commanding 3-0 advantage and never looked back.
Bastian Blumenberg had three saves in the first 66 minutes in goal before
Diego Casas got some time in the net.Â
Plenty of newcomers got action in the opener, in fact so many it's understandable to have some chemistry issues in the first 90 minutes of the campaign. Barraza, Blumenberg and
Alfredo Rodriguez were the only starters who were even on the team in 2018. Three freshman got the start - midfielder
Carlos Rodriguez, defender
Lazar Pavlovic and forward
Hector Perez.
Mobile defeated Warner University 4-0 in their season opener, Thursday. TXWES has met Mobile just once, ending in a tie.
