Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Cameron Irvine

Lady Rams blast past Bulldogs

FORT WORTH - Texas Wesleyan Women's Soccer (2-2) won its second consecutive game Saturday afternoon, with a 3-1 triumph over McPherson at Martin Field. It was the Rams explosive second half that separated the two teams as TXWES wore down the Bulldog defense with 29 shot attempts in all, 12 on goal.

After a quiet start to the season, Tameir Grosvenor roared to life in the second week of the season. After a hat-trick and a pair of assists against Texas College on Tuesday, Grosvenor added two more Saturday, both breaking ties with McPherson. The latter came in the 70th minute - assisted by Savanna Barron - muscling her way to a good look. The former was pure athleticism as she danced pass the goalkeeper for a clean early look at the net to get the Lady Rams going. Savannah Hart assisted this goal from the back line and even had three different opportunities to score herself. McPherson ... was stingy.

Despite getting thoroughly run around in the first 40 minutes, the Bulldogs managed to tie the game on a perfectly placed header in the box from Nelly Rodriguez, off the head of reserve Dina Der Vartanian - the Bulldogs couldn't have executed better. But McPherson didn't have nearly enough firepower. After Grosvenor's first two goals, Danica Kunschik rocketed a missile with a swish in the 76th minute to give the Lady Rams some breathing room. She was active in the midfield all day, including an incredible pass to transition defense into offense coupled with a steal moments later purely off hustle.

In the end, a complete game that needed goalkeeper Christy Zwart to make just one save and an offense that consistently produced good looks left Head Coach Josh Gibbs happy in the heat.

"It's always good to win," Gibbs said. "I thought we dominated for 90 minutes - (McPherson) never really broke down. But credit to them, they made it very tough to play and we'll finish better going forward but I thought we showed progress. We have lots to improve on before a very good LSU-Alexandria team next weekend."

The Lady Rams could have easily had three more goals. In the 41st minute, Kristen Carter found the crossbar on a ball that actually stayed in play and sent McPherson's goalkepper chasing. In the final seconds of the first half, Grosvenor got a clever ball from Taylor Ross onto her foot and drilled the left post. With 12 minutes left, it was Ross' turn to fall victim to the bounce, lifting the ball off the ground dinging the underside of the crossbar at just the right angle to watch it fly up and over goal. Despite an empty cell in the goals category, it was Ross (five shots), Barron (three shots) and Danielle Trought (five shots) that provided the relentless attack when Grosvenor was bottled up, wearing out the Bulldogs as the sun began to shine brighter.

"I loved seeing great performances by Kunschik, Barron, Lindsey Beckrich (defender) and Jordan Gilbert (defender)," Gibbs said. "They were such a great compliment today."

LSU-A will be the Lady Rams next opponent, Saturday September 7 at 1 p.m. at Martin Field. The Pilots will meet TXWES for the first time carrying a 2-1 record into Fort Worth, also falling to defending NAIA National Champion William Carey to start their season.
