Lady Rams three-game win streak snapped

SILOAM SPRINGS, AR - Texas Wesleyan Volleyball (6-5, 2-1 SAC) fell in straight-sets to John Brown (9-3, 2-1 SAC) - 25-19, 25-17, 25-16 - Saturday in Arkansas, ending the program's unbeaten streak in a Sooner Athletic Conference filled with parity. Only two weekends in, only Oklahoma City remains unbeaten.

A balanced offensive attack helped TXWES hit .147. Veronika Webb led the way with eight kills, while Chastiny Brown and Arianna Alvarado each spiked seven. Alvarado got rolling in the third set, scoring three of four points attempting a comeback. Brenda Pargas and Morgan Burns split time as the primary passer, with Pargas contributing 14 assists to Burns' 13. The Lady Rams kept the errors down - just 16 on the attacking side - and got a better feel for the game as the day went along, hitting a day's best .242 in the final set. Madison Lopez captained the defense with 10 digs.

In Set 1, the Eagles jumped out on the Lady Rams taking a 22-14 advantage. TXWES responded with four-straight points, including a Brenda Pargas ace and a Brown kill but had dug too deep a hole.

The Lady Rams led 12-11 in Set 2 thanks to a Brianna Sitton kill, capping a 7-2 run. But down just one, 16-15, Texas Wesleyan surrendered seven-straight points and John Brown pulled away.

John Brown stepped on the gas in the third set going on two separate 5-0 runs deflating the Rams chances of a rally. The Eagles were efficient, hitting an astounding .500 in the final set, also improving their offense with each passing serve.

Siloam Springs has proven to be a tough place to play. The Lady Rams have lost four of their last six at John Brown, but when JBU comes to the Sid Richardson Center, TXWES has won five of six.

Texas Wesleyan has a critical week ahead, with both Southwest Assemblies of God and Oklahoma City coming to town, Tuesday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m., respectively. The two programs both received votes in the NAIA Preseason Coaches' Poll last month and have raced out to 10-1 (OCU) and 8-4 (SAGU) beginnings. Sandwiched in between the two will be a date with Southwestern Christian Thursday at 7 p.m. The Eagles, who finished fifth-best in the SAC in 2018, are off to a 6-6, 1-3 start.
