Volleyball wins 10th-straight home game

FORT WORTH, TX - Texas Wesleyan Volleyball (8-5, 4-1 SAC) won its fourth consecutive conference game and its 10th game in a row at home - dating back to last season - with a straight-sets victory over Southwestern Christian (6-7, 1-4 SAC) 25-19, 25-12, 25-23.

The Lady Rams came out laser focused, hitting .382 with 17 kills to just four attacking errors. Down 13-12 in Set 1, TXWES suffocated the Eagles with a 3-0 run to pull ahead 15-13 and then, once tied again at 15, went on a 7-1 run to close SCU out. During the latter stretch, the Eagles made four attacking errors and buckled but the balance of the Rams' offense contributed too. Four players contributed to the team's last five kills of the set, including Chastiny Brown, Veronika Webb, Sydney Charlton and Morgan Burns.

Texas Wesleyan may have shown dominance down the stretch in the first race to 25, but showed it from start to finish in Set 2. The Lady Rams leaped out to an 11-3 advantage, with the final five points scored on a 10-1 run by five different players (Webb, kill; Burns, ace; Charlton, kill; Arianna Alvarado, kill; and Madison Lopez, ace). Again, errors did the Eagles in late - giving away three points in a Rams 5-0 run, putting the Southwestern Christian's back against the wall.

SCU responded in the third set and didn't make things easy on the Lady Rams. There was a moment, however, that was undeniable. To break the tie at 21, Brenda Pargas set up Charlton for a vicious spike that got the Sid Richardson Center shaking. While the Eagles re-gained the lead 23-22, TXWES was unwavering getting the final three points from - once more - three different attackers: Brown, Alvarado and Charlton who swung the door shut on Southwestern Christian's effort to extend the contest.

The balance at the end of sets and during runs was reflected in the overarching review of the hour and 15 minute match. Brown had 11 kills, Alvarado recorded 10 while Charlton and Webb each had nine stabs. Pargas and Morgan Burns split sets - 22 and 17 assists, respectively. Alvarado landed a double-double coupling her 10 kills with 11 digs, while Lopez pitched in 10. Webb led the defense at the net with 3.5 blocks. In the last three matches, Webb has accumulated 13.5 rejections.

Not only was it the team's 10th-straight home win, but it was also continued a streak of set wins - 10 - dating back to the final set played in the Sid Richardson Center of the 2018 campaign. The last team to beat the Lady Rams in their building was over a year ago - September 15, 2018 - Oklahoma City, which comes back to The Sid Richardson Center Saturday at 1 p.m. The Stars, the Sooner Athletic Conference's lone unbeaten, kept pace with the Rams resume Friday night when they beat Southwest Assemblies of God - another conference title contender - 3-1 in Waxahachie.
