Rams dazzle in 8-1 victory over SAGU

FORT WORTH, TX - Texas Wesleyan Women's Soccer (6-3, 1-0 SAC) wasted no time piling on the goals against Southwestern Assemblies of God (2-6, 0-1 SAC) Tuesday night at Martin Field in an 8-1 victory to begin Sooner Athletic Conference competition. Tameir Grosvenor wasted no time getting her eighth career hat trick - it took her 14 minutes and 24 seconds.

Grosvenor, now with eight goals in the last two games and 12 goals in the last four, has 63 career goals - just 12 away from topping Jessica Carrion's 74 obtained in 2005. There are eight games left in Grosvenor's junior season.

Grosvenor scored in the third minute, assisted by Danielle Trought and put in the next two unassisted in the 10th and 15th minutes. After Grosvenor got her fill against SAGU goalkeeper Taylor Jackson - who was awarded SAC Defensive Player of the Week this past week - Trought managed to find the back of the net for the first time since her two goals against Texas College on August 27. The Lady Rams out-shot the Lions 34-5, one shy of the season high.

After a fourth Grosvenor goal in the 29th minute - a backwards swat for necessary style points (assisted by Katelynn Teufel) - TXWES found plenty of sparks off the bench in the second half. Cat Smith came in and provided a clever flick off her right foot that rolled just inside the right post in the 58th minute for her first goal of the season. Smith then later provided an encore with an unassisted put-away in the 77th minute, the game's final score. It was the second time in her career she put two in the back of the net, her first coming as a sophomore against Texas College.

"It's always good to win, especially to open conference play," said Head Coach Josh Gibbs. "The real bright spot for me was the play we got off the bench. Cat Smith has worked extremely hard to get on the field and it showed tonight in her performance. I really liked that we were able to play everyone tonight and I think those off the bench really took advantage of the opportunity."

Familiar names like Kaitlyn Finger, Julia Soriano, Reyna Ramirez, Sasha Trejo and Jordan Cooksey all got action but fans got a chance to also get quality time with goalkeeper Julia Villalobos, Reilly Stone, Sara Alcala, Hannah Allen, Sara Gomez, Jessica Pierce and Maddisen Pierce. Jessica Pierce helped Grosvenor assist Taylor Ross in the 48th minute that put Texas Wesleyan up 6-0 early in the second half.

It wasn't all a breeze for the Lady Rams. The rival Lions came in just as hungry and controlled the tempo early on. SAGU even put in a goal in the 63rd minute, preventing the Rams from recording their third shutout off the season.

"In the early going, SAGU frustrated us tactically," Gibbs said. "I didn't feel like we were at our best today. I know the score says otherwise, but we never really got into our style of play."

Grosvenor finished with four goals, two assists and seven total shots. Her two assists give her seven on the season, a new career high, surpassing the six she recorded in each of her first two campaigns. She is the first player in a Lady Ram uniform to have more than six assists in a season since Samantha Moore's 10 during the 2017 run.

TXWES will get a week off before facing Southwestern Christian Tuesday October 1. The Eagles were off Tuesday night and will play Oklahoma City to open SAC play on Saturday.
