Football falls in another shootout

BATESVILLE, AR - Texas Wesleyan Football (0-4, 0-2 SAC) seems to find its way moving down the field for a game-tying or game-winning drive. The wins will come in time, but Saturday night Lyon College (3-1, 2-0 SAC) got the better of Texas Wesleyan in a 53-45 shootout. The number of the night was 99.

With 3:54 to play in the first quarter, Diamond Williams recovered a fumble forced by Tyquandrick Conner, scooped it up and took it back 99 yards for a score. The play - which was blown up in the backfield as Lyon was attempting to tie the game - helped put the Rams up 20-7, part of a first quarter that included a Donovan Isom 24-yard touchdown run and a 23-yard passing score from Isom to Collier Ricks. Lyon didn't waste any time countering. Orreon Finley returned the ensuing kickoff 98 yards, helping keep Lyon hanging around.

The number 99 would creep into the storyline once more, only this time it was the turning point in the game for the Scots. On 3rd and 11 from their own half yard line, backed up as far as an offense can be in their own end zone, Lyon converted a 3rd and 11 on the Rams' aggressive defense with a lofted ball over the top of man coverage to Randy Satterfield who took the top off the press coverage. Satterfield outran the TXWES defense 99 yards for a score, taking a 34-27 Lyon lead and expanding it to 14.

Still, Texas Wesleyan still nearly completed the comeback. Down 47-30, quarterback Avery Childs, who came in for Isom later in the second half, completed a 26-yard touchdown to Ricks, cutting the deficit to 10. Childs wasn't done. Trailing 53-37, in the no-huddle offense, Childs put a pass on a rope to Ricks on a go route down the sideline. The Rams went for two and got Ricks a passing score, completing a ball to Nick Nail on a trick play, trimming the gap to the eventual final score.

Childs finished 6-for-20 for 150 yards, 2 touchdowns and two interceptions, one of which came on the final drive of the game as the Rams were marching to potentially tie with a touchdown and a two-point conversion. Isom went 14-of-26 for 147 yards with two touchdowns and zero interceptions. Isom also rushed for 110 yards and a score on just seven carries.

Ricks nabbed five passes for 104 yards and two scores - his first multi-touchdown game as a Ram. Brandon Rolfe also grabbed two touchdowns - his first multi-touchdown game as a Ram as well - for 116 yards on five receptions. Jonathan Milsap flew to the ball all night, leading the defense with 15 tackles, 1.5 for loss. Zalen Long earned two sacks and an interception but Dimaond Williams stole the show.

Williams finished with a two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, the defensive touchdown, a tackle and a pass break up. The defense has at least one interception and one forced fumble in each of the season's first four games.

The relentless four game road trip, that put the Rams on the road for the first four games of the season, has mercilessly come to an end. TXWES will finally get a chance to play in front of the home town fans Saturday October 5 in primetime, when Southwestern Assemblies of God comes to town for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The two teams are familiar with the types of shootouts the Rams have gotten themselves into the last couple of weeks. The Lions won last year's meeting in Waxahachie 53-46.

In the Rams last eight Sooner Athletic Conference losses, five games have been stolen away by eight points or less.
