FORT WORTH, TX - Texas Wesleyan Volleyball (4-4) improved to .500 after a dominating 25-8, 25-15, 25-10 performance over Jarvis Christian (4-4) in the new-look squad's debut in front of the hometown fans at the Sid Richardson Center.
Brenda Pargas set a new high in a Ram uniform with five service aces, five of the team's 11 - the most aces the team has had this season and the most since 12 recorded against Central Christian August 31, 2018. She had three in the first set, a set dominated by sharp serves and attacking play up front from
Chastiny Brown, who finished with a match-high 10 kills.
"We came out strong and took care of business early," said Head Coach
Jessica Ransom. "It was nice to finally play at home and get some quality reps going into conference play this weekend."
The only attempt by the Bulldogs to steal a set came in Game 2, when the Bulldogs managed to muscle their way into a 12-12 tie. The Rams brushed off the attempt with six-straight points. While
Haley Harvey served, Brown and
Sydney Charlton each earned two kills plus a strike from
Veronika Webb. Harvey, along with Charlton,
Tatemn Brown,
Arianna Alvarado,
Alejandra House and
McKayla Flowers are all part of the freshman class Ransom brought to Fort Worth in the off-season and all got to see playing time in their new home gym. Many are already deeply entrenched into the fabric of the team: Charlton finished with seven kills, Alvarado had six kills and six digs, while Flowers turned in a block and three digs. Â
It's not just the freshman class making an impact early, it's the incoming transfers, too.
Madison Lopez (Texas Tech) led the team with 13 digs, Webb (NCTC) had four kills,
Morgan Burns helped Pargas in the passing game with six assists and Gabriella Gracia Badillo turned in four assists and four digs.
All this adds to the magic of Brown, Pargas,
Brittni Mohle,
Brianna Sitton and
Ashley Curry, the returners from a 2018 squad that earned a spot in the NAIA National Tournament in Ransom's first season at the helm. It's a sign of things to come and the tune up came at a perfect time. Texas Wesleyan heads to Langston and Central Christian, Thursday and Saturday, respectively, to begin Sooner Athletic Conference competition. For now, the students who came out and supported the team and the fans who have been diehards for years went home happy.
Despite all the highs for the Lady Rams, there were plenty of lows for the Bulldogs. Jarvis Christian committed 45 different types of errors in the match that lasted just an hour and ten minutes, mostly on arrant passes at or near the net, preventing attackers from gaining a rhythm. The 33 points scored by Jarvis was the least scored by any opponent early on in this campaign. Last season, three teams scored less than 33 points in straight-set losses to the Rams and two of the struggling opponents are the aforementioned Langston and Central Christian next up.
It was the fifth-straight 3-0 victory for Texas Wesleyan over Jarvis Christian, dating back to 2012.
