FORT WORTH, TX - No. 19 Texas Wesleyan Men's Basketball (12-4, 5-2 SAC) kept climbing the momentum mountain, but ultimately No. 2 Mid-America Christian (16-0, 7-0 SAC) never surrendered control of the game and stayed at the top of the Sooner Athletic Conference with a 92-81 win over the Rams.
Tied at 37 in the second half, MACU went on an 11-2 run to pull ahead 48-39 with 14:48 to play. TXWES would claw it's way back - an and-1
LaMont Simmons bucket and free throw with 10:40 remaining tied the game at 56, but MACU hit a trey 19 seconds later at the other end of the floor, capping off an 11-3 run with the clock ticking down to eight minutes, putting the Evangels back in control 67-59. The efforts appeared futile down the stretch as MACUÂ snapped Texas Wesleyan's four-game streak of scoring at least 90 points in front of the home town fans at the Sid Richardson Center.
Peyton Sallee scored 19 hitting five threes while grabbing seven rebounds in 36 minutes, his fourth-consecutive game in double figures after being reinserted into the starting lineup at the turn of the calendar.
Akeem White contiuned his success off the bench, scoring 15 to go along with seven boards of his own.
Joe Cook-Green added 11 on 5-of-7 shooting and
LaMont Simmons notched 10 points. The Rams bench out-scored the Evangels 36-27 off the bench and had more points off turnovers (19-12) but couldn't overcome what was simply a tough shooting night (42.2 percent).Â
TXWES did, however, shoot 21-of-22 from the line, the teams best free throw percentage in a game in program history, topping a 17-for-18 performance at Langston during the 2004-05 stretch. The Rams scored more points against MACU then any team has so far in 2020 - the Evangels came into the game holding opponents under 60 in three-straight outings.
Mid-America Christian and Georgetown (Kentucky) remain the only unbeaten teams left in the NAIA this season after Georgetown bounced Life (Georgia) on Life's home floor, 76-37 Thursday night.
Texas Wesleyan will take a brief trip to Chickasha, Oklahoma to face University of Science and Arts-Oklahoma on Saturday with a 4 p.m. tip-off, a road game sandwiched between four home dates that pick back up next Thursday at home against Langston (8 p.m.), before Central Christian visits Fort Worth on Saturday (3:45 p.m.).
