Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Cameron Irvine

Rams clobber Aggies, 90-50

FORT WORTH, TX - Texas Wesleyan Men's Basketball (9-3, 2-1 SAC) showed no rust from the holidays and finally got a chance to shake off a 138-127 double-overtime loss pre-Christmas by taking frustrations out on a short-handed Oklahoma Panhandle State (3-7, 0-3 SAC) squad, 90-50.

It was the sixth-straight game TXWES has scored at least 90 points, the longest such streak since 2011 when that bunch scored 90 or more in five consecutive matchups.

The Rams went on a 9-0 run in 2:22 to put Texas Wesleyan up 27-10 with 10:05 to go in the first half, getting buckets from Davon Berry, Sebastian Karwoski, David Shepard and Joe Cook-Green in the process.

Berry got whatever he wanted in the paint all night against the Aggies, who only brought seven active players with them to the gym. Berry finished with 17 points, six rebounds and four assists - the first time he's scored in double-digits in back-to-back games. He's had at least five rebounds in five games in a row as the team's starting point guard.

Karwoski earned a double-double - his third of the season - coupled with a season high in assists (11 points, 11 rebounds and five assists). David Shepard scored a season high 17 points off the bench on 6-of-14 shooting, 5-of-12 from beyond the arc.

Coach Brennan Shingleton shook up the starting lineup Thursday, giving Peyton Sallee and LaMont Simmons their first start of the season. Simmons didn't disappoint, pouring in a game-high 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting, often using strong hands to collect passes inside for easy lay-ups above flailing arms underneath him. Sallee got more minutes than any other player against the Aggies as he grows into a new role as a sophomore after having to carry an injury-depleted team from 2018-2019. This season, TXWES has played mostly healthy, with seven players having played in all 12 games to start the season. Only four players played all 30 games last season.

The Rams owned the paint, 40-16 and has won all of their matchups against the Aggies in Fort Worth (0-2 in Goodwell, Oklahoma).

TXWES will face an angry Wayland Baptist squad Saturday at 4 p.m. The Pionners have had a bizarre last few weeks. The team's leading scorer, JJ Culver, scored 100 points against Southwestern Adventist on December 10, the second-highest total in NAIA history. On December 28, Wayland lost to Hardin-Simmons 113-108 in triple overtime and then got waxed by winless-in-SAC Southwestern Assemblies of God Thursday night 90-60 - Culver scored seven points and fouled out.
