Defense clamps down on Langston as No. 19 Rams outlast Lions

FORT WORTH, TX - No. 19 Texas Wesleyan Men's Basketball (14-4, 7-2 SAC) won a 88-74 battle Thursday night at the Sid Richardson Center by attacking the Langston Lions (11-7, 4-5 SAC) until the visitors from Oklahoma were depleted.

Langston, a team that has played with the same eight-man rotation since the start of the season, was whistled for 26 fouls in the contest. Starters Stevie Pringle and David Hunt II, responsible for 22 of the Lions' 74 points, fouled out in the second half. Ryan Scales, the team's leading scorer this season, scored 10 points in the second half but was bottled in the final 20 minutes and managed just one more basket.

After shooting 18-of-33 in the first half, the Rams slashed Langston's production in the second frame by ten buckets - 8-of-33. TXWES shot 58.5 percent for the game and out-rebounded the Lions 40-24. The 53 field goals were a season low, but Texas Wesleyan was still able to nearly reach its season average in scoring (91).

The Rams have won six of their last seven games. Sebastian Karwoski led the offense on this night with 22 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks on 9-of-12 shooting. The bench produced 36 points, led by 15 points from David Shepard in just 18 minutes.

Akeem White cracked double figures in his 10th-consecutive appearance with 14 points to go along with eight boards as his steady hands handled a lot of difficult passes through traffic inside, avoiding what could have resulted in more turnovers for the squad and a wasted night of strong shooting. Coming into the game, White was 26th in the nation in field goal percentage (55.6 percent). That average will go up after making all five of his field goals against the Lions.

Davon Berry and Sam Lorenzen each chipped in 10 points.

Langston tied the game at 60 with 10:30 left in the contest, but was out-scored 24-10 over the next 9:09. During that period, the Lions were called for eight of their 26 fouls.

The two squads played on this exact day eight years ago. The Rams also scored 88 points in that ball game, an 88-64 triumph. It was TXWES' 14th win of the season, matching the team's win total from a season ago with 11 games to play in the regular season.

The Rams will face Central Christian Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Sid Richardson Center. Central Christian has come up empty all four previous meetings against the Rams since the Tigers joined the Sooner Athletic Conference.
