FORT WORTH, TX - In one of the most remarkable second halves of basketball you'll ever see, Texas Wesleyan Women's Basketball (11-5, 6-3 SAC) topped the Central Christian Tigers (5-11, 2-7 SAC) 62-42 at the Sid Richardson Center. The game didn't always have that wide of a margin.
The Tigers led 29-25 at the half. With 7:04 to play in the third quarter, CCC held a 34-29 advantage. Then, not only did the wheels fall off the cart, but the cart burst into flames. Over the next 14 minutes and seven seconds, Central Christian missed 21 consecutive shots from the floor, only scored two free throws and didn't hit a bucket until 2:57 to play in the game, when its 34-29 lead had turned into a 55-36 deficit.
The Lady Rams found easy lay-up after easy lay-up by pushing the tempo on missed baskets. The Tigers looked completely defeated, a slump that would haunt even the most talented of basketball team's nightmares. Central Christian scored a measly eight points in the paint, while 10 of the Rams' 26 points in the paint came in a 23-point fourth quarter that blew the game open.
Freshman
Makayla Coy made her fourth-straight start as a freshman and led the offense with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Alexus Brigham scored 12 off the bench, with three rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Jordan Brightwell added 11 rebounds in just 20 minutes, her third-straight game with at least nine off the glass.
Chrystal Ngawuchu had nine rebounds to go with six points and
Nicole Gleason grabbed eight rebounds to go with five points and four assists.
In total, TXWESÂ took the Tigers' 19.5 percent shooting and transformed those misses and bonus opportunities into 57 total rebounds, the most rebounds in a game for the Lady Rams since January 23, 2017, a non-conference game against Arlington Baptist. CCC shot 4-for-35 in the second half.
Texas Wesleyan won a game by the exact same score February 7 of last season against Southwestern Christian in very similar fashion. Up 40-38 with 4:06 to play in the third quarter against SCU, the Eagles came up empty on their next 18 possessions - 0-of-9 from the floor with nine turnovers and no offensive rebounds as Texas Wesleyan went on a 20-0 run that expanded their lead to 22, 60-38, with 2:22 to go.
A three-game road trip is next for the Lady Rams, now in third place thanks to another conference upset - Science and Arts-Oklahoma was bounced by Southwestern Christian, helping break a three-way tie at third leaving TXWESÂ tied with just Mid-America Christian, who the Rams defeated earlier this month at home. Wayland Baptist (second place), Panhandle State (11th place) and Southwestern Christian (sixth place) will host Texas Wesleyan before the Lady Rams return home February 8 against OCU.
