Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Bradford lights it up; Rams pull away from SCU late

The senior poured in 31 points in the win

FORT WORTH, Texas – The Texas Wesleyan University men's basketball team (3-0) collected a 97-83 win in a tough match-up with a dangerous Southwestern Christian University (1-1) team on Thursday night. Bradford led all scorers with 31 points.

In a game where the Rams led for over 70 percent of the time, the Eagles certainly did not make it feel that way, as SCU stayed within striking distance for most of the contest.

The Rams went 12 for 12 from the free throw line with under three minutes left in the game to cruise to victory and stay undefeated. The team shot 79 percent from free throw line in the second half to put the game to bed.

The Ram attack had little trouble getting good looks, and shot well – 57 percent from the field for the game.

The Rams shot 55 percent from the field in the first half, led by a 16-point effort from Vydal Bradford. Bradford was 3 for 5 from behind the arc, adding five rebounds and five assists in the first 20 minutes. Calvin Marshall also poured in 10 points.

The Eagles led 13-8 five minutes in on the heels of a Khristien White 3-pointer, and the visiting continued to control any signs of a Ram break out, taking time on the offensive end to slow the break-neck pace the Rams employ. The SAC teams were tied at 21 apiece when Bradford knocked down a triple that started a 12-2 TXWES rally capped by a Ryan Flores lay-in that gave the home team a 30-21 advantage with five minutes remaining in the opening salvo.

The Rams held serve from there and nursed a 49-44 lead heading into the break.

In the second half, the two teams battled as SCU erased the deficit early and made it a closely contested contest throughout. The Eagles crowded the lane, and made the Rams shoot free throws. The team responded by going 30 for 42 in the category.

The Rams were best on the fast break and points off turnovers. TXWES did a tremendous job on the defensive end by interrupting the Eagle offense often. They ended up +15 in points off turnovers as a result.

Bradford added eight rebounds and six assists in the win. Sebastian Karwoski went 4 for 5 from the field and was a perfect 6 for 6 from the line. Marshall Calvin produced 10 points in just 11 minutes of work. Christopher Coley landed in double-digits with 11. Ryan Flores brought down 10 rebounds and added seven points in the effort.

Next up is Science and Arts in a rematch of the 2019 SAC Quarterfinal game. That game is scheduled for Thursday, November 12 at 8 p.m.
