MCPHERSON, Kan. – Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball (0-1) opened the season with a 58-53 loss at Central Christian College (1-4) on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Rams led for most of the contest, and by as many as 10 points late in the second quarter, but the Tigers stalked and lurked in the late stages of the game.
TXWES was effective at keeping the home team at arm's length for most of the matchup, backed by a dominant +17 effort in rebounding.
The Lady Rams struggled a bit from the field though, and costly turnovers with the game on the line were the difference in this one. The team was outscored 15-8 in the final frame as the Tigers were able to pounce on a TXWES turnover with 1:34 remaining and turned it into three points on the other end to secure the lead.
Sophomore
Makayla Coy led the team, shooting 38 percent from the field and earning a double-double with 13 points and 13 boards. Senior
Hailee Walls led all scorers with 16 points, to go along with seven rebounds.
Senior
Evie Whorley brought down a career-high 17 rebounds. She added four steals in the standout effort.
The Lady Rams are scheduled to host Science & Arts (Okla.) on Thursday, November 12 starting at 6 p.m. at the Sid Richardson Center, in a third attempt at a home opener.
