Stars give best effort, but No. 20 Rams too much to handle

FORT WORTH - No. 20 Texas Wesleyan Men's Basketball (17-6, 10-4 SAC) beat the Oklahoma City Stars (12-11, 5-9 SAC) in a narrow victory Saturday, 73-69. It was the fifth-straight time the two teams have decided a contest by single digits. The Rams won in OKC earlier this season, 83-80.

Turnovers were the difference for OCU down the stretch as the Stars coughed up a near-upset triumph. In the last nine minutes of the game, Oklahoma City turned the ball over 10 times after 14 giveaways in the first 31 minutes of action. The Rams turned those 10 giveaways into 11 critical points in a tight game. Texas Wesleyan also turned 12 offensive rebounds into 13 second-chance points. Despite not ever leading by double-digits, TXWES led all but a few seconds in the second half and the turnovers helped keep momentum on the side of the Rams.

Oklahoma City shot 52.7 percent, but Texas Wesleyan shot an identical percentage, wiping out the Stars strong road performance from the floor. OCU fell to 2-6 in true road games this season.

Peyton Sallee led the way with 21 points and four of the team's five threes. LaMont Simmons returned to action for the first time at the Sid Richardson Center since he suffered a minor injury leaving that game vs. Langston early - scoring 11 points, hauling in six rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal. Davon Berry added a similar stat line of 10 points, six boards, three assists and two steals.

Akeem White kept his double-digit points streak alive (15 games) by hitting all five of his shots from the floor with four rebounds. The streak stayed possible thanks to his bucket with six seconds left that put the Rams up by two scores, guaranteeing TXWES would leave the gym with a 'W'. The Stars missed a last-gasp three pointer in the final seconds.

University of Science and Arts-Oklahoma comes to town Thursday night, February 13 at 8:00 p.m. The two teams have met 16 times since 2014. Five out of the last seven meetings have been decided by single-digits in the hyper competitive Sooner Athletic Conference. After Saturday's results, the Rams are solely in fourth place, but more importantly are now a full three games ahead of fifth-place Wayland Baptist.
