Baseball slips to Patriots in non-conference action

FORT WORTH, Texas – The Texas Wesleyan baseball team (16-12) dropped a non-conference game to Arlington Baptist (2-21-1) 10-8 at Sycamore Park on Tuesday.

Momma said there'd be days like this. The Rams slipped in a warm-up game heading into an important conference series with Mid-America Christian. The Evangels are 21-8 overall this season and 0-3 in SAC play. MACU opened conference play with a 3rd ranked Science & Arts team a year removed from a NAIA World Series.

Rams vs. Evangels at Sycamore Park will start with a double header on Thursday, March 12 starting at 1 p.m. The series was moved up a day to try and stay ahead of possible thunderstorms on Friday.

Noah Lynch, a junior from Arlington, Texas, got the start and went four solid innings in the no-decision. He tossed four innings and had four strikeouts. He allowed one, a home run in the second inning.

The Rams were quick to get the run back, tying the game in the bottom of the inning. Michael Higgins led off the inning with a stand-up triple off the top of the extended wall in center field, which led to a sacrifice RBI from Kevin Santiago.

TXWES took the lead in the third after a lead-off Kaden Brown double down the left field line led to another sacrifice RBI, this time courtesy of Joaquin Ballesteros. Marcos Sanchez drove a second run in on a single through the right side. The Rams owned a 3-1 edge.

Arlington Baptist knotted things up in the fifth after pitcher Garrett Price helped his own cause, going the opposite way with a line drive down the left field line for a two RBI double.

The Price hit seemed to be the preamble to a big would lead to big one, a six-run seventh inning.

The Rams worked into a jam in the seventh, loading the bases with none away in the inning. Price delivered another hit through the left side that scored one, but the second run was cut down by a good throw to the plate by the left fielder Ballesteros. The troubles continued however, and a Parker Humphrey bases clearing double to deep right center made it a 7-3 advantage for the Patriots. ABU continued to pile on runs, making it 10-3.

The Rams made a furious rally in the final two innings, scoring 5 to shorten the lead, but the Patriots would hold on and get the morale-boosting win.

The Rams had six different players record a RBI. Santiago went 3 for 4 with one RBI. Tanner Amaral went 3 for 5 with one RBI. Sanchez, who also pitched in the game today, went 2 for 3 and drove in one. Mark Schreiner went 1 for 2 with two RBI in the loss.

Amaral leads the team, hitting .375. Higgins in the home run leader in the clubhouse with nine. Higgins and Sanchez share the team RBI lead with 26.

Gabriel Sequeria has a 1.98 ERA with 73 strikeouts in 41.0 innings pitched. Calhoun has a 0.00 ERA and 15 K's in 10.0 innings pitched. Jesse Ramirez owns a 2.14 ERA with 43 strikeouts in 33.2 innings pitched.
