TUSCON, AR - Texas Wesleyan Softball (6-16) continued its strong showing in Arizona Wednesday with a 2-0 victory over Roosevelt University (5-19) and another competitive 6-2 loss to No. 14 Olivet Nazarene.
Jenna Rhoades hit 2-for-3 with a double in the loss to Nazarene and went 2-for-2 and took a walk against Roosevelt. Rhoades is hitting .369 this season, second best on the team, up from .278 in 2019. She already has half the RBI and stolen bases she had two seasons ago, career highs. Rhoades scored twice with
Kaitlyn Johnson at the plate. Johnson went 2-for-5 with those 2 RBI.
Taylor Tubbs once again did most of the work on the mound, pitching nine of the 13 innings - splitting time with
Madison Ortiz who got the other four innings of work. Roosevelt got 10 hits off of Tubbs, but the defense behind her left 11 runners stranded.Â
In the fourth inning with runners on first and third, sisters Khloe and
Kylie Summers - at catcher and short stop, respectively - perfectly executed a runner caught stealing second. After a walk reset runners on first and third,
Chyann Jarrett cleared a pop-up and ended the frame.Â
In the fifth with runners on first and second, Tubbs struck out two batters before
Bridgette Krippel caught the third out in center field and with bases loaded in the sixth, it was
Payton Davidson who got to make the unassisted play this time on a ground-out to third base. It was softball's first shutout of the season and first since March 3 of last year against Southwestern Assemblies of God.
The tournament wraps up with battles against Dakota Wesleyan and Aquinas College on Thursday. before the Rams return home and resume conference play with a four-game series against Central Christian from Sycamore Park starting Monday at 3 p.m.
