FORT WORTH, TX - Texas Wesleyan Softball (3-13) continues to play better than its record and that was evident Tuesday afternoon at Sycamore Park, despite taking 4-1 and 9-5 losses against No. 2 Oklahoma City (13-3).
In Game 2, the Lady Rams had a 5-0 lead on the Stars led by timely hitting, especially in the third frame. Peyton Davidson got the inning started with a single, then stole second.
Jenna Rhoades singled on a bunt to advance Davidson, then stole second herself on
Kylie Summers at-bat, which also resulted in a a sacrifice bunt that resulted in a score.
Sandra Lopez made it to first just in time on a fielder's choice by the short-stop, whose long throw could not get across the field in time.
Ashton Davis knocked a double into the outfield and with the bases loaded,
Mercedes Beltran was walked to put another point up on the scoreboard.
The inning prompted an abrupt exit from the dugout for OCU Head Coach Phil McSpadden, frustrated by his team's play. He later returned and so did Oklahoma City's standard dominance. The Stars scored six runs in the fifth frame, capped by a three-run homer by Jaden Shores, who got the win on the mound in Game 1 - momentum was lost. The Lady Rams out-hit the Stars 10-9 in the rematch, led by Davidson's 4-for-4 performance at the plate. The top of the lineup - Davidson, Rhoades and
Kylie Summers - combined to hit 8-for-10 with 2 RBI. Davidson stole four bases.
Game 1 was more about pitching and freshman
Taylor Tubbs delivered. Tubbs struck out five while giving up just six hits in a full seven-inning bout, walking only three batters. Tubbs came in to pitch late in Game 2 and earned another K without giving up a hit against the three batters she faced. Davidson was the electricity on offense in this matchup too, earning three hits with a RBI.
One play scored the deciding three runs for the Stars, a Mallory McCoy double which ended up scoring three after a throw to home lingered behind the plate long enough to bring in a third baserunner.Â
Summers had a bounce-back game in the field too, playing error-free softball with a couple of exceptional defensive plays.Â
TXWES will head to Arizona during Spring Break for the Tuscon Invitational where the Lady Rams will get a chance to play eight games over four days before resuming conference play at Sycamore Park March 16 against Central Christian.
