Softball sweeps season opener

FORT WORTH, Texas — The Texas Wesleyan softball team won their first games of the season, sweeping conference foe Southwestern Christian in their doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.

The Lady Rams took game one, 4-2, and game two by run rule 12-4 on a day where the wind blew 25 mph with gusts up to 31 mph.

Brynna Foster highlighted the Lady Rams in a well-rounded performance. In the doubleheader she hit 5 for 6, with 4 RBI and crossed the plate 4 times herself. She also pitched five innings in game two where she struck out six batters and earned her first win of the year. That same game she doubled twice, each time bringing in a run.

Saeya Esparza also had a great game at the plate as she went 4 for 6 with 1 RBI. Kimani Ferguson batted 3 for 5 with 1 RBI as well as stealing two bases.

Foster started the scoring for the Lady Rams in the first inning of game one as she hit a 2 RBI single to center. TXWES added two more in the second on a Kylie Summers double and Mercedes Beltran groundout.

The Eagles did not score until the sixth when they hit a two-out two-run homer, but that proved to be their only score as Taylor Tubbs (1-0) held it down in the circle for the complete game win. She allowed 5 hits, 2 runs, walked 1 and struck out 6 batters.

TXWES kept momentum jumping to a 6-0 lead in two innings. SWCU cut the lead in half in the third with an RBI single, and Keirsten McCraw hit her second 2-run homer of the day.

The Lady Rams were not deterred as they scored four more in the bottom and tacked an additional two in the fourth scoring two runs on a passed ball.

SWCU managed had one run in the fifth but left two on as the game ended in a 12-4 run rule.

TXWES is now 2-0 while SWCU is 2-2.

Next the Lady Rams will host Ottawa University-Arizona in a four-game series March 5-6 at Sycamore Park.
