SB finishes OPSU series, splits DH

FORT WORTH, Texas — The Texas Wesleyan softball team closed out their series with Oklahoma Panhandle State, splitting the final double header on Saturday in Sycamore Park.

The Rams dropped game three 4-2, but picked up the finale win 6-4.

After four scoreless innings, the Aggies had a big fifth inning jumping ahead 4-0. The Rams cut the lead in half with solo homers from Madison Ortiz and Taylor Tubbs in the respective fifth and sixth innings.

But TXWES went down in order in the seventh for the 4-2 loss. Starter Brynna Foster got the loss in the circle, although the four runs she allowed were unearned. She pitched 4.2 innings striking out four Aggies.

In the series finale, the Rams struck first with Ashton Davis laying down a sac bunt to score Kylie Summers. OPSU would hit a solo shot to tie the game in the second inning.

With bases loaded in the third, Davis would plate two more as she hit a ball to short, but the Aggies missed the fielder's choice force out at the plate allowing two runs to score and runners to advance into scoring position.

Mercedes Beltran then laid down a bunt single through a hole on the right side to score Foster and Ortiz groundout in a double play but meanwhile the runner scored for the 5-1 Ram lead.

Beltran gave the Rams insurance with a sac fly in the fifth for the 6-1 advantage. OPSU would cut the deficit to two runs in the sixth. In the seventh, their leadoff struck out then they got in scoring position on a double. However, on a fielder's choice, Beltran threw the runner out to catcher Prewitt and a walk later, the Aggies popped out for the Rams victory.

Ortiz is now 3-0 in the circle after starting the game pitching five innings allowing 7 hits, 4 runs walking one and striking out two. Tubbs got her first save of the year closing out the final two frames allowing just two hits.

TXWES (11-11, 10-8 SAC) will travel to Oklahoma City for a double header vs the Stars on April 16.
