Lady Rams stomp Trailblazers, 74-56

DALLAS— The Texas Wesleyan women's basketball team (17-2, 11-2 SAC) defeated UNT-Dallas (10-11, 4-10) 74-56 on Saturday afternoon at the Signing Hills Rec Center for their fourth straight win.

TXWES played an even first quarter with the score being tied at 16 after 10 minutes of play. The Lady Rams continued their stout defensive play as they held the Trailblazers to 13 points on 4 of 13 shooting (30 percent) in the second quarter.

After 2 quarters of play, the Lady Rams shot 14 of 39 from the field (36 percent,) and 0-7 from the three-point line. Despite struggling offensively, TXWES led 32-29 at halftime.

The Lady Rams have dominated the paint all season long and nothing was different today as they scored 32 points on the block and out-rebounded the Trailblazers 49 to 30. TXWES was able to create space in the third quarter as they swarmed to the ball and created turnovers. The Lady Rams scored 24 points off turnovers.

After 3 quarters of play, TXWES led 51-43. The Lady Rams were able to end the game on a 23-13 run in the fourth quarter.

TXWES had 4 players score in double figures. Junior Kertisa Amos scored 24 points, freshman Zarria Carter scored 19 points, junior Na'Teiona Cole scored 10 points, and junior Mary Nyakundi scored 11 points. Nyakundi impacted the game in other areas as she had 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Cole also corralled 7 rebounds.

Junior Makayla Coy attacked the glass as she had 9 rebounds. Her counterpart Zarria Carter also snagged 9 rebounds.

The Lady Rams are on pace to be the first TXWES team since 2000 to win 21 games or more in a season. TXWES also moved to 2-0 all-time against UNT-Dallas.

TXWES will return home on Thursday, Jan. 27 to take on Mid- America Christian University at the Sid Richardson Center.
