MSOC: Rams use second-half surge to beat USAO 4-1

The Rams got their first SAC win with a second-half surge against the University of Science and Arts Oklahoma at home Oct. 4.

The 4-1 win puts Texas Wesleyan at 1-2-0 in SAC play and 8-3-0 overall. This also brings the all-time record against the Drovers to 3-9-1 with the last time the Rams recording a win in 2016. A 2018 game ended in a tie, so Tuesday night's game at Martin Field was revenge after a double overtime 3-2 loss in Chickasha, Oklahoma, last year.

The Rams struggled to find the back of the net in the first period Tuesday night as shots from Lazar Pavlovic went wide, and an Osvaldo Lopez header went high. But 24:12 into the game, just two seconds after USAO's Darnell Charles received a yellow card, the Rams' Levi Brunner scored, giving Texas Wesleyan a 1-0 lead. Another shot from Oscar Odriozola was saved by USAO's goalie Nathan Fitch.

Strong defense from Texas Wesleyan's Jonathan Lopez, Anuar Trejo and Matias Villalobo helped stop the Drovers' surge at the end of the period, but the Rams weren't able to contain Mihajlo Blazic at the 44:55 mark as the two teams went into the half tied at 1-1. That was the last goal the Drovers would score.

In the second period, Texas Wesleyan came out strong with a goal from Mario Herrera a little over two minutes into the second half. Herrera scored again less than three minutes later.

Texas Wesleyan goalie Jim Van Dijk kept the Drovers out of the net with four saves in the second period. He had eight saves in the game, leading all players. Brunner connected for his second goal of the game sealing the 4-1 win for the Rams at the 81:25 mark in the game. Herrera provided the assist to go with his two goals for the game.

The Rams will be looking to extend their home-field dominance against Mid-America Christian University at Martin Field Saturday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. The Rams have only lost two games at home this season with an 8-2 home record. The Rams have only beaten MACU twice since 2013 with both wins coming at home.

The Evangels come into the game ranked No. 1 in the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll with a 9-1 overall record.
