The Lady Rams pummeled the Texas College Lady Steers in a physical game in Tyler Nov. 12 winning 97-60.
In the first half, the Lady Rams continued to struggle from the field, shooting only 33.3% in the first and 37.5% in the second. But Texas Wesleyan led throughout the game, dominating on the boards with 32 rebounds to Texas College's 15 and in the paint with 42 points to Texas College's 26.Â
It was that dominance, along with a strong defensive performance by the Lady Rams resulting in 24 points off of turnovers that frustrated Texas College and resulted in most of the Lady Steers fouling out. Texas College had 17 turnovers to the Lady Rams seven.
In the last two minutes of the game, Texas Wesleyan went from an 81-60 lead to a 97-60 win as the Lady Rams shot 19Â free throws, making 17 of those attempts.
Five Lady Rams scored in double figures with Zarria Carter with 25 points and Mary Nyakundi scored 16 points, and Nyakundi grabbing five rebounds. Kertisa Amos scored 15 and grabbed 12 rebounds; Taryn Willis scored 12 points, and Makayla Coy scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Maliah LaCour also had a stellar game, coming off of the bench to score eight points and nab seven rebounds. The Lady Ram bench scored 33 points to Texas College's 10 from the bench.
The Lady Rams were able to get their shooting on target in the second half, shooting 57% in the third and a blistering 72.7% from the field in the fourth and 89.5% from the line in the fourth. Texas Wesleyan finished the game shooting 51.6% overall.
The win puts the Lady Rams at 2-1 for the season.
The Lady Rams travel to Oklahoma City for their first conference game at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17, against Oklahoma City University. Texas Wesleyan returns home on Nov. 19 for a 2 p.m. start against John Brown University.
