WBB: Lady Rams fall against #10 Wayland Baptist

Box Score FORT WORTH-- The Texas Wesleyan women's basketball team (19-5, 13-5 SAC) suffered a tough  77-70 loss against #10 Wayland Baptist (25-3, 17-2) on Thursday night at the Sid Richardson Center.

TXWES started the game off with a defensive steal by junior Kertisa Amos, which resulted in an easy two points for Amos at the other end of the court. The Lady Rams continued their fierce play on the defensive end on the next possession by forcing the flying queens to a 30 second shot-clock violation.

Junior Kertisa Amos crashed the offensive glass hard in the first quarter by converting two offensive rebounds into four points with consecutive layups. WBU made a run of their own to claim a 15-11 lead with 3 minutes left in the first quarter.

Amos scored 11 points on 5 of 6 shooting in the first quarter. The Lady Rams had four players score a basket. After one quarter, the Lady Rams trailed 21-20. 

Carter and Amos converted tough layups to give TXWES a 24-22 lead early in the second quarter. WBU answered back with four points of their own to claim a 26-24 lead with 5:04 left in the second quarter. An Amos layup and a converted three-point play made the score 36-30 with 1:51 left in the second quarter. A Quinnae Love three-pointer cut the Lady Rams deficit to 3 points with less than a minute left in the first half. 

WBU battled back to extend their lead to 40-33 heading into the half. TXWES dominated the offensive glass with 13 offensive rebounds and 24 total rebounds in the first half. The Lady Rams shot 31 percent from the field in the fist half on 45 shots.

To start the third quarter, Zarria Carter scored a tough turnaround shot and Makayla Coy scored four straight points to make the score 40-39 with 7 minutes left in the third quarter. After a slow start in the beginning of the third quarter, the flying queens went on a 9-4 run to extend their lead to 5 points. 

Carter and Amos scored consecutive baskets off hard-fought rebounds to make the score 50-47 with 3:44 left in the third quarter. After two free-throws by Carter, and a tough finish on a layup by Coy to give the Lady Rams a 51-50 lead in the final moments of the third quarter.

TXWES outscored WBU 22-12 in the third quarter. The Lady Rams played swarming defense in the third quarter with relentless effort in the passing lanes. After three quarters of play, the Lady Rams led 55-52.

The Lady Rams continued their gritty effort in the fourth quarter as it went on a 10-3 run capped off by a cross-court pass from Cole to Amos for an and-one layup. Amos converted the three-point play to make the score 64-55 with 5:59 left in the game. WBU went on an 11-0 run to make the score 66-64 with 2:54 left in the game. 

Carter soared through the lane for a fanatic finish at the rim to tie the game at 66 with 2 minutes left to play in the game. WBU scored 4 straight unanswered points to take a 70-68 lead with 1:23 left to play. 

Carter hit a tough layup through contact to cut the deficit to 3 points with 20 seconds left in the game. TXWES suffered a tough 77-70 loss. 

Two Lady Rams secured double-doubles. Kertisa Amos scored 29 points and snagged a career-high 16 rebounds, and Zarria Carter corralled her 10th double-double of the season with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Makayla Coy had a near double-double with 13 rebounds and 8 points.

The Lady Rams move to 2-19 all-time against WBU. TXWES will host senior day on Saturday, Feb. 12 against OPSU at the Sid Richardson Center.
