PINEVILLE, La. – The Texas Wesleyan softball team (1-1) split the day in the 2022 season debut. The Lady Rams won a 2-1 battle with Cottey College (Mo.) (0-4) before dropping a 7-3 game to #24 Central Baptist College (3-0) at the LSUA/LCU Softball Showdown on Friday.
The first game of the day was a low-scoring affair, with the go-ahead run coming on a wild pitch in the fifth inning. Cottey College took an early lead after the Comet lead off batter doubled and then stole third before trotting home on a throwing error.
The Lady Rams tied it in the fourth with a three hit inning.
Kylie Summers provided the RBI on a single up the middle to plate Jaeley Lopez, who reached on a single through the left side.
After giving up the early run,
Taylor Tubbs (1-0) shut out the Comets for six innings on the way to the complete game win. Tubbs allowed just the one run on five hits, walked two and struck out seven. At the plate, Summers led the way going 2 for 3 with a RBI.
In game two, the Lady Rams were helped by a home run to center by
Rhea-Ann Avalos in the second to make it a 2-1 Mustang lead. Central Baptist extended the lead with a five-run rally in the third to make it 7-1.
TXWES got two back in the fourth on a bases loaded fielder's choice play that included a throwing error. That made it a 7-3 game, but the Mustangs held off the Lady Rams in the final three to stay undefeated.
Dylann Kaderka (0-1) suffered the loss. The went 2.2 innings, allowing four earned runs while striking out four. At the plate, Avalos led the team going 2 for 3 with a home run.
The Lady Rams finish the showdown tomorrow taking on host LSUA at noon and #16 William Carey at 4:30 p.m.
