WBB: Lady Rams top MACU, advance to first SAC championship

Lady Rams advance to first SAC title in program history

Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY-- The Texas Wesleyan women's basketball team (25-5, 17-5) defeated MACU (27-4) 74-55 on Monday evening to advance to its first SAC championship game in program history. 

The Lady Rams dominated the first quarter of play with a 23-6 run. TXWES allowed a season low 6 points in the first quarter. MACU did not score a basket in the last five minutes of the first quarter.

The Lady Rams continued its stifling defense in the second quarter, allowing only 12 points. TXWES dominated from start to finish in this game. 

MACU battled back in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 12 points, but the Lady Rams were not phased as it protected its lead with dominating defense and superb shot-making.

TXWES put the game out of reach late in the fourth quarter with a three-pointer by Makayla Coy. The Lady Rams beat MACU for the first time this season.

Freshman Zarria Carter dominated the paint with her first career triple-double, scoring 26 points, snagging 19 rebounds, and recording 10 blocks. Carter notched the first triple-double in the program in over 5 years. Carter was three rebounds short of the program record 22 rebounds in a game, which is held by her fellow teammate Makayla Coy. Kertisa Amos also notched a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

The Lady rams gave relentless effort on the glass, out-rebounding MACU 54 to 32. TXWES also dominated defensively recording 12 blocks and 7 steals. The Lady Rams also scored 28 points in the paint and 16 second-chance points. 

MACU shot 19 of 68 from the field (27.9 percent,) and 6 of 22 from the three-point line (27.3 percent.) TXWES shot 46 percent from the field and 71.4 percent from the free-throw line.

The Lady Rams will appear in its first SAC Championship game in program history. TXWES has now won 25 games this season, which matches the 2011-2012 team. Only the 2010-11 and 1978-79 teams have won more games in a season in program history.

TXWES will battle Wayland Baptist for he SAC title on Tuesday, March. 1 at the Gaulke Center in Oklahoma City.
