VB: TXWES Wins First Conference Match over Central Christian

The Rams handed Head Volleyball Coach Jessica Ransom her 100th victory in three sets 27-25, 25-10, 25-17, over the Central Christian College Tigers (3-6, 0-1) in their first SAC game of the season.

Texas Wesleyan improved its record to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

Freshman outside hitter Lauren Crismore continued to shine at outside hitter against the Central Christian Tigers. She started her college career being named SAC Attacker of the Week, and with this game, she continued to show her skills with a .444 attacking percentage connecting on 9 of 18 attempts.

Set one was a back-and-forth game as the Tigers worked their way back from an early Texas Wesleyan lead to tie the game and go ahead with a match point. Both coaches used their timeouts in the first set to change the tempo; each time, the team returned effectively. However, the firepower of junior outside hitter Kendal King led all players in the match with 10 kills, 4 of which came in the first set, and senior right side Sydney Charlton rallied the Rams to a 27-25 win.

Set two saw attack after attack from Charlton, freshman middle blocker and outside hitter Sydney Alexander, junior middle blocker Maliah Linton and King to leave the Rams with a 21-5 lead before Central Christian mounted a short-lived comeback with set-point at 24-10. It wasn't enough to stop the Rams, who took set two 25-10.

Central Christian went out to a quick lead in set three, but the Rams chipped away with solid blocking and powerful attacks from Linton and freshman outside hitter Lauran Richards to take the lead 22-15. A brief rally by the Tigers sputtered as Texas Wesleyan won the third set 25-17 to take its first match in Conference play.

Alexander had the best hitting percentage of the match, connecting on 7 of 11 attacks for a .455 attack percentage. Sophomore setter Ruby O'Brien showed why she was named SAC Setter of the Week in the first week of the season with 22 assists and 8 digs against Central Christian. Junior defensive specialist Andrea Malek led all Texas Wesleyan players with 20 digs for the game.

The Rams play Langston University on Sept. 3 at 1 p.m. in the Sid Richardson Center for another SAC conference game. Texas Wesleyan comes into the game 5-2 overall and 1-0 in SAC play. Langston is coming off of back-to-back losses to bring its record to 5-3 for the season.
