Box Score
The #17 Texas Wesleyan Lady Rams remained undefeated in the Sooner Athletic Conference at 10-0 after a visit by the Queens of Wayland Baptist Thursday evening.
The Lady Rams scored the last 12 points of the game and led almost the entire game. Wayland was able to tie the score at 56 late in the third quarter, but turnovers were the downfall for the Flying Queens, who had 23 turnovers to the Lady Rams' three. The victory was the 14th straight win for the Lady Rams, who were finally added to the Top 25 Coaches poll on Jan. 11 after being snubbed earlier in the season despite decisive wins over previously ranked teams.Â
In the final minutes of the game against Wayland, the Queens pulled within one at 75-74, but that would be the last points Wayland would score as the Lady Rams forced three turnovers and poured on the points, scoring on six of their final seven possessions to take the win 87-74.Â
The Lady Rams had four scorers in double figures. Makayla Coy had a double-double in the game, scoring 20 points and nabbing ten rebounds. She also became the latest member of the 1000-point club at Wesleyan. Mary Nyakundi scored 15 points and had three steals. Senior Kertisa Amos scored 14 points, nabbed three rebounds and had two steals. Zionna Barbee scored 12 points and nabbed three rebounds.Â
Texas Wesleyan came into the game fourth in the nation in rebounding margin, averaging 13.6 rebounds over their opponents per game. Still, Wayland was able to outrebound the Lady Rams 43-33.Â
But the turnovers told the tale for the Queens as the Lady Ram defense forced 23 turnovers to Texas Wesleyan's three. The Lady Rams scored 33 points off of turnovers.
The Lady Rams move to 15-1 overall after the win, with their only loss coming to LSU-Shreveport early in the season, and remain undefeated in SAC at 10-0. In the NAIA national standings, Texas Wesleyan is in ninth place overall. Three NAIA teams are still undefeated in the nation, while the Lady Rams are one of nine teams with just one loss this season.
The Lady Rams continue SAC play at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, against Oklahoma Panhandle State at the Sid Richardson Center.Â
