Fort Worth, TX – Four Rams scored in double figures as the Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team knocked off the Southwestern Christian University 75-64 on Monday inside the Sid Richardson Center.
Texas Wesleyan got off to a hot start draining two three-point shots to set the tone of the match. Southwestern Christian would keep things close before pulling away after going on a scoring run to take a 21-13 lead over the Rams as the quarter ended. The Eagles would knock down five three pointers in just the first quarter of play.
The Eagles would start the second quarter making another shot from beyond the arc to extend their lead over the Rams. Down 15-24 the Rams would go on a small run to cut into the deficit, but the Eagles would continue to dominate from the three-point line to hold the Rams. As the quarter ended the eagles would lead 39-30
The Eagles would start the half going on a 6-0 run to start the second half. Not to be outdone the Rams would go on mini run of their own to cut the score down 40-47. The two teams would continue to trade points with one another with the Eagles maintaining a small 54-50 lead as the quarter came to a close.
In the final quarter of play the Rams would come out attacking the basket as they looked to capture their first lead of the match since the first quarter.
Mary Nyakundi would knock down a contested shot in the paint and complete the point play by making her free throw shot. After a defensive stop
Taryn Wills would give the Rams the lead at 63-62 after driving down the lane to score. The Rams would turn up the pressure on defense as the Eagles struggles to find any momentum of offense.
Savanna Smith would come up with a huge steal to extend Texas Wesleyan's score forcing the Eagles to call a timeout with five minutes left on the clock. The Rams would continue to score after back-to-back buckets from freshman forward
Rikeyah Gant. With two minutes let on the clock the Rams led 71-62 heading into the final moments of the match. Wills would score the next four points to close out the game and the rams would go on to win 75-64. Texas Wesleyan improved to 6-4 on the season and 2-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Tayrn Wills turned in a season-high 18 points,
Mary Nyakundi added 14 points, and teammates
Savanna Smith and Rikeyah each chipped in 12. Collectively, Texas Wesleyan hit 41.4 percent (29-of-70) from the field and shot 81 percent (13-of-16) from the free throw line.
Texas Wesleyan continues conference play at the University of Science and Arts on Saturday, Dec. 16. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Drover Field House.
