MSOC: Rams Fall to Pioneers on Penalty Kicks 3-2

FORT WORTH, TX - Wayland Baptist took an early lead over Texas Wesleyan in regulation of the quarterfinals in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament, with Jamol Williams scoring the first goal at 26:33, assisted by Francis Motsi.

Vito Zatikyan extended WBU's lead to 2-0 at 34:55. Texas Wesleyan responded, pressuring the Pioneer's defense but finding themselves repeatedly denied by Wayland goalkeeper Alex Neri. Chandler Brookins managed to break through with a goal in the 42nd minute, assisted by Matteo Todorovic, cutting Wayland's lead to 2-1 at halftime.

Texas Wesleyan carried its momentum into the second half, equalizing with a 64th-minute goal by Louis Guffroy, assisted by Mathis Guffroy.

Both teams played aggressively, with Wayland's Williams and Jorge Jaimes testing the Ram's goalkeeper, Jesus Diaz. Fouls mounted on both sides, and yellow cards were issued to TXWES' Nathaniel Neang and Wayland's Val Gonzalez. Including several close attempts and shots by Francisco Navarrete and Fabricio Martinez, the second half ended 2-2.

In the first overtime, Texas Wesleyan ramped up the pressure, with Todorovic taking an early corner kick. However, neither team could capitalize, leaving the score unchanged at the end of the first overtime.

Texas Wesleyan continued its attack in the second overtime, with more corner kicks from Todorovic and a shot from Neang. Wayland's Gonzalez hit the post in the 103rd minute, but the deadlock persisted, leading to a penalty shootout.

The shootout saw Texas Wesleyan struggle against Neri, missing several crucial attempts. Wayland's Williams and Elliott Idehen scored decisive penalties, while Texas Wesleyan's Lopez, Todorovic, and Gutierrez also converted. Ultimately, Niklas Thiel's successful penalty clinched the victory for Wayland Baptist in a tightly contested match.
