POINT LOOKOUT, MO - Texas Wesleyan fell to the College of the Ozarks on Saturday at Keeter Gym, 79-61.
The loss brings the Rams to a 7-3 overall record and 3-3 in conference play, while the Bobcats improve to 6-4 overall and 4-2 in conference action.
The Rams started strong in the first quarter, with Imani Mitchell and Giani Wimbish-Gay providing key scoring opportunities. However, the Bobcats established an early lead behind the efforts of Susanna Moran and Blythe Benefield, closing the quarter ahead 17-13. Missed opportunities on offense plagued Texas Wesleyan despite solid defensive rebounds from players like Sophia Hurtado and Kamryn Gibson.
The second quarter saw College of the Ozarks extend their lead significantly, ending the half up 40-21. Moran continued to dominate, scoring and controlling the boards with a game-high 21 rebounds and 29 points. For the Rams, jump shots by Iasia Goldman and Taryn Wills provided brief sparks, but missed field goals and turnovers stymied their progress.
In the third quarter, Texas Wesleyan showed increased intensity, with Mitchell leading the offense with consistent scoring and Phillips and Payton Foster adding defensive highlights. The Rams narrowed the gap slightly, but the Bobcats maintained their edge with strong performances from Moran and Taylor Rush, who contributed 15 points, including three three-pointers. By the quarter's end, Ozarks led 60-37.
The Rams displayed resilience in the final quarter, with Mitchell contributing a team-high 17 points and Hurtado securing six rebounds to energize the team. Texas Wesleyan capitalized on free-throw opportunities, finishing the game with a 73.1% from the charity stripe.
However, the Bobcats' efficiency in converting turnovers and second-chance points proved insurmountable.
The Rams return to the Sid Richardson Center on Thursday to play Wayland Baptist tipoff at 6 pm
