WBB: Fourth Quarter Rally Sends Rams Past OCU

FORT WORTH, TX - With just two weeks left of the basketball regular season Texas Wesleyan took on the Stars of Oklahoma City University in a close contest with playoff contentions of the line. After four action packed quarters the Rams would defeat the Stars 68-63.

With many questions remaining on who will advance to the conference tournament, both teams needed to secure a win tonight. The first half was tightly contested as neither team was able to pull away from the other. Going into halftime the Rams held a 31-28 lead over Oklahoma City.  Much like the first two quarters of play the third would see both teams trading buckets as they continued to battle heading into the final seconds of the quarter. The Stars would hold a 42-41 lead over the Rams heading into the fourth.

Taryn Wills would come out the break fired up as she would finish a tough shot at the basket and complete the three-point play by drilling the ball at the free throw to tie the game at 44-44.  For most of the quarter the two teams would continue to trade points with the Stars keeping a slight two-point advantage. With under five minutes left the rams would tie the match up at 51-51.  Wills would come up big again with back-to-back buckets to give the rams the lead at 55-53. Mary Nyakundi would take a trip to the free throw line and knock down both shots to push the Rams ahead again. Texas Wesleyan would continue put the pressure on the Stars as they struggled to make any shots down the stretch. The Rams would come up with another three-point play as Imani Mitchell would drive to the basket and draw a foul.

The Rams went on to defeat the Stars after scoring 27 points in the quarter. As a team Texas Wesleyan shot 21-62 (33.9%) from the field and went 6-18 (33.3%) from beyond the arc.

Mary Nyakundi finished with 19 points, with teammate Taryn Wills right behind her with 18 points. Kamryn Gibson would also add 10 points in the victory. With this win the Rams have clinched a playoff spot and will look to compete in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament.

Texas Wesleyan returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 17 versus No.13 John Brown University. Game time is set for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
