SILOAM SPRINGS, ARK. - With the Texas Wesleyan women's basketball team's Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament life hanging in the balance, the Rams would go toe to toe in a highly competitive match-up against No. 1 seed John Brown University. Ending the game on a 12-5 run, the Golden Eagles would hit the biggest shot of the night, nailing a bucket from the left elbow of the arc and would hold eventually hold on for a 61-57 win over the Rams on Thursday night inside Bill George Arena in the Sooner Athletic tournament quarterfinals.
After an impressive first quarter, Texas Wesleyan would shoot 60 percent (10-of-17) from the field and 3-of-4 from behind the arc, shocking the Bill George Arena fans by taking a 10-point lead three minutes into the second quarter. Not to be outdone, after trailing the Golden Eagles would answer with 16-4 run to take two-point lead at the half at 36-34.
With two ties and three lead changes in the third quarter, neither team could pull away from the other. The teams would enter the fourth quarter tied at 47 apiece. With their season on the line,
Mary Nyakundi would nail a three point shot and
Taryn Wills would knock down a jumper to give Texas Wesleyan the slight edge. The Golden Eagles defense stepped up, and would hold the Rams to just 2-of-14 over the final minutes of the final period. After shooting 42 percent in the first half, Texas Wesleyan fell to 27 percent (9-of-34) in the second half. Tied at 57 a piece John Brown would hit a last minute threw pointer with 48 seconds left on the clock to take the lead. The Rams would be unable to complete the upset and fall to John Brown University 57-61
Taryn Wills secured a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds.
Kamryn Gibson finished with 12 points while
Peyton Foster came off the bench to score 10 points.
After a season of many ups and downs, the Rams will wrap of the year with a record of 13-16 (9-13, SAC) and look to rebuild for next year.
