FORT WORTH, TX — The Texas Wesleyan University Rams fell 76-71 to Nelson University Lions in a closely contested matchup on Monday night at the Sheaffer Center.
The Rams (13-5, 9-5 SAC) started the game with intensity, matching Nelson's pace through much of the first half. Forward Richard Amaefule was dominant in the paint, grabbing 11 rebounds and contributing 13 points, while guard Montez Young Jr. added another 13 points off the bench. The Rams converted offensive rebounds into 14 second-chance points, keeping them within striking distance.
Nelson (14-6, 12-4 SAC) showcased an efficient offense, shooting 44.3% from the field and 39.1% from beyond the arc. CJ Hall was unstoppable, scoring a game-high 25 points, including a perfect 11-of-11 from the free-throw line. Guard Micah Clark came off the bench to add 11 points, with three made triples, providing critical scoring depth.
The first half saw Nelson build an early lead, thanks to sharpshooting from JJ Boling and Preston Lawrence, who combined for five three-pointers. Texas Wesleyan clawed back with contributions from Trey Sinegal and Anthony Sierras, narrowing the deficit to 41-36 at halftime.
In the second half, the Rams continued to battle, with Sinegal and Kaden Morgan knocking down key shots to keep the game close. Defensively, Amaefule's presence in the paint and Sierras' effort on the boards helped limit Nelson's offensive opportunities. However, turnovers and cold stretches from the field proved costly for Texas Wesleyan.
With under a minute remaining, the Rams surged back, cutting Nelson's lead to one point after a clutch three-pointer by Sierras. However, Hall calmly sank four free throws in the final seconds to secure the win for Nelson.
The next two contests will be on the road, playing against Wayland Baptist on Thursday and Oklahoma Panhandle on Saturday.
