OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - Texas Wesleyan University secured a dominant 50-37 win over Oklahoma City University on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Rams, led by Taryn Wills with 14 points, improved to 9-4 overall and 5-4 in SAC play, while the Stars fell to 5-9 and 5-5 in conference action.
The Rams opened the game with high energy, thanks to Wills' eight-point burst, including a three-pointer and a layup. A late three-pointer by Peyton Foster gave Texas Wesleyan a narrow 16-15 lead at the end of the first quarter. Both teams showcased defensive intensity, with Imani Mitchell and Iasia Goldman contributing key blocks for the Rams.
The second quarter belonged to Texas Wesleyan, as they outscored the Stars 11-3. The Rams' defense forced turnovers and limited Oklahoma City to just one field goal in the period. Kamryn Gibson and Mitchell contributed critical points in the paint, while a strong rebounding effort led by Sophia Hurtado and Goldman helped the Rams enter halftime with a 27-18 lead.
In the third quarter, Texas Wesleyan extended its advantage behind the efforts of Giani Wimbish-Gay, who scored eight points, and Aniyah Sanford, who nailed a pivotal three-pointer. Key steals by Hurtado and Mitchell fueled fast-break opportunities, allowing the Rams to push their lead to 40-25 heading into the final period.
The Rams sealed the win with aggressive defense and timely scoring in the fourth quarter. Savanna Smith's three-pointer early in the frame and Wimbish-Gay's fast-break layup highlighted Texas Wesleyan's offensive efficiency. Despite a late rally by Oklahoma City, including contributions from Akajia Handsom and Taryn Cottrell, the Rams maintained their composure to secure the victory.
Texas Wesleyan shot 33.9% from the field and forced 24 turnovers, converting them into 24 points. Oklahoma City struggled offensively, shooting just 22.6%. Â
