SAN ANTONIO - Texas Wesleyan University (4-2) fell to Texas A&M-San Antonio (3-1), 73-69, after a tightly contested game. Despite leading for 17 minutes and 36 seconds and securing a 46-44 rebounding advantage, the Rams could not overcome Texas A&M-San Antonio's crucial 23-point fourth quarter.
The game began with an early exchange of free throws, as Aniyah Lewis put Texas A&M-San Antonio on the board with two successful attempts. The Rams responded with a fast-break layup by
Kennedy Holmes and a three-pointer from
Sophia Hurtado, taking a 6-2 lead. Talaiyah Andrews trimmed the deficit to two points with a layup at 7:59. The Rams then extended their lead to 15-6, with
Kameryn Phillips contributing a layup and
Kyla Speights hitting a three-pointer at 2:54.
Nala Richardson closed the quarter by making two free throws, securing a 20-14 lead for Texas Wesleyan.
Texas Wesleyan maintained a narrow lead as Phillips scored a layup at 9:15, putting the visiting team up 24-17. Hurtado opened the third quarter with a tip-in, giving the Rams a 40-34 advantage. Texas A&M-San Antonio responded with a layup from Emily Carranco at 7:17, narrowing the score to 40-38. Despite a scoring burst from Richardson, including a jumper and a layup, Texas Wesleyan's lead slipped as Lewis tied the game at 48 with a layup at 2:18. The quarter concluded dramatically, as Speights secured the lead for Texas Wesleyan by sinking two free throws with eight seconds remaining, finalizing the quarter with a 52-50 lead for the visitors.
The fourth quarter was marked by a series of turnovers and strategic plays. Evelyn Lorenzo of Texas A&M-San Antonio tied the score at 52 with a jumper early in the quarter.
Peyton Foster responded with a three-pointer, giving the Rams a brief lead at 55-52. However, Whitemon's shooting, including a three-pointer and a tip-in, helped the Jaguars regain momentum and extend their lead to 64-57. Despite Richardson's late layup and free throw cutting the deficit to two points, Texas A&M-San Antonio secured the win with two final free throws by Lorenzo, closing the game at 73-69.
The Rams return to action and open conference play against Central Christian College of Kansas on Thursday in the Sid Richardson Center, with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m.
