FORT WORTH, Texas — Texas Wesleyan (5-3, 1-1) fell to Langston (6-0, 2-0), 61-52, at the Sid Richardson Center despite leading by as much as seven points in the first quarter. Langston capitalized on turnovers, scoring 23 points off the Lady Rams' 27 turnovers to secure the victory.
The first quarter began with Texas Wesleyan taking an early lead, thanks to a three-pointer by
Jenae Moore at 9:18.
Kameryn Phillips extended the lead with a layup and a subsequent free throw at 3:31, making the score 12-5. Langston responded with a layup by Amaris Timmons at 4:14 and another by Dauzhanay Harden with one second left, closing the quarter with a score of 12-9. The Lady Rams' defense was strong, with
Kennedy Holmes contributing two assists and
Sophia Hurtado hitting two three-pointers.
In the second quarter, Layla Curry's free throws at 4:30 tied the game, 14-14, after Texas Wesleyan's
Kyla Speights had briefly given her team the lead with a jumper at 5:46. Alexandria Jefferson's three-pointer at 6:21 had earlier tied the score, and Speights responded with a three-pointer of her own at 3:22 to push the Lady Rams ahead again. Langston's Amaris Timmons scored two consecutive layups, bringing the score to 18-17 in favor of Langston. However,
Nala Richardson's two late layups, the second at 0:59, put Texas Wesleyan back in front, 22-20. Germari Harris ended the quarter with a buzzer-beating jumper, tying the game at 22-22 heading into halftime.
Langston edged out Texas Wesleyan in the third quarter with a narrow 16-15 advantage. Alexandria Jefferson was instrumental for the Lions, contributing two three-pointers and a fast-break layup. Richardson countered for the Lady Rams, scoring eight consecutive points that included a three-pointer and two layups, tying the game at 30 with 5:20 remaining. The quarter concluded with
Alaina Hill of Texas Wesleyan making a free throw to level the score at 37, but Layla Curry quickly responded with a successful free throw at the 40-second mark to give Langston a one-point lead.
Langston secured a commanding fourth-quarter victory over Texas Wesleyan, fueled by a strong shooting performance, including four three-pointers. Alyssa Parmer led the Lions' charge early in the quarter, contributing a layup and a free throw to build momentum. Jefferson's two three-pointers extended Langston's lead, with the team reaching their largest advantage of 12 points at 1:40 remaining. Despite Moore's late three-pointer and free throws by Phillips, the Lady Rams could not close the gap, as Langston finished with a 61-52 win.
Richardson scored 11 points and converted five of six shots from the field. Moore added nine points, sinking three of five attempts from beyond the arc. Phillips contributed 11 points, converting seven of nine free throws and recording two steals. Hurtado tallied eight points and grabbed five rebounds, including two 3-pointers.
